Old school, awesome when they are installed right, but normally turn into bug hotels.

The ‘high end’ new homes I see are using open isokern fireplaces/chimney systems with spray foam. They have a little door on the side of the fireplace opening for an outside air kit.

Mine will be in a corner, with one of the sides an exterior wall. I'm thinking they'll introduce fresh air that way.

That is how mine is set up and doesn't have any problems drafting with the spray foam.

We put a couple of zero clearance fireplaces in our house when we built it a couple years ago - one in the living room and one in the master BR. We're spray foamed also. The "fake" fireplaces work fine. I wish I'd done away with the one in the master and just built one real masonry fireplace in the living room. The little metal box just seems cheap when you're used to a real fireplace. But a masonry fireplace probably wouldn't draw good in our spray foamed house. I'm getting more used to the zero clearance, but they're just not real fireplaces. You can burn wood in them though.

Didn’t read past the first few post…having a air tight house and then having a huge hole (fireplace) pulling in humid air every time the A/C comes on is likely going to cause issues.
You need to find an air conditioning contractor really up to speed on the science behind this type of a build.

Almost all cook stoves have a vent going out. If your pushing air out then you need air coming in somewhere. Just use double wall stove pipe for the stove vent hood and have air coming back in through the outer part. That is what I did for the house we live in now and I have no problems with our wood burning stove.

I consulted with Dale before we installed our “fake” “insert” pre-fab word burner in our new house.

we added an extra fresh air intake on the chase and foamed the whole house.

I’ll update and let you know how it works in a few years when it gets cold enough to have a fire.

We love our wood burning fireplace in our new foamed home.
It also has closable air vents to the porch behind for draw.

We built our custom home 4 years ago with the entire home foam sprayed. We were told with the foam that the fireplace would not be able to pull enough draft as the house would be too sealed up unless we opened a window. We went with a propane Isokern fireplace inside. Then we put an outdoor fireplace on the back porch entertaining area and outdoor kitchen so I could still burn some sticks. Good Luck!

Our home is not foam insulated but it is build dang tigh, I opted for 2x6 exterior walls and thicker batt insulation along with the outside wrap. We went with Isokern fireplaces more like a true firebrick built in fireplace. They take full size logs not the little stove wood required by most inserts.

The one in the living area will flat run you out of the living room and also keeps all but the farthest rooms warm enough that the heat doesn’t cycle.

the one on the back porch takes a bit to warm up but will keep you comfy on most of the back porch.

I went with the Majestic Warm Magic that Dale mentioned. It has 2 outside air vents. Puts out a lot of heat in the living area. Moved into house in August so I had to wait a while to fire up the fireplace.
