Doesn’t matter to me one way or the other, it’s a first world problem. If you think things are bad now, brace yourself, because it’s gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better !

I love the self checkout stuff then have to show your receipts to walk out the door like at Sams or Costco. You should see their face when you refuse to show them and say you should have checked me out at register and keep walking.

I don’t mind self-checkout in the grocery store so much. At the very least, it keeps me from having to answer banal questions like, “How is your day going?”

However, I went into a full-service restaurant for lunch the other day that had no waitstaff. Not only did I have to access the menu through a QR code, the order was processed through an online app where, before being able finalize your order, you had to log in via Google or register with your email address.

Uh-uhh. I got up and left.

Should have stuck around. At checkout they probably ask for a tip for the great service you provided yourself!

No way. Unloading the trucks is actually pretty easy now days. Electric pallet jacks and a 1 or 2 guys takes 30 minutes or less. When I started working for Winn Dixie in 75, it would take a crew of 5-6 guy`s around 2 hours to unload a non-perishable truck by hand. Back then, they didn`t even use pallets. The trucks would be stacked from the front to back and everything was on the floor and had to be unloaded one piece at a time on a conveyor that went up into the back of the trailer and into the back of the store. Sometimes as much as 200'. Unloading one of those trailers during the summer was brutal.

I like the person to person interaction at check-out. And intentionally chose P2P if both self check and P2P is available 90% of the time, regardless of the size of my purchase. I understand the various interest in driving the profit margin with big stores also. And have nothing against that. But there comes a time to pull on the reins and slow the horse down too.

I love it also..........and the up and coming generation has already voted with their fingers, no stopping it now!
Concept locations of Whole Foods are doing ZERO CHECKOUT. Your credit or debit card (or form of payment) is registered in their system. You walk in the location and you are identified as a qualified customer. You pick up everything you want to buy and just walk out the EXIT door. All items are scanned as you walk out......your method of payment is charged. No different than a TOLL ROAD............I am sooooo excited for that day to reach our local grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.

Interesting article today on this topic re Trader Joes:

'As false as false can be': Trader Joe's executives say no to self-checkout in stores

                              Emily DeLetter
                              Cincinnati Enquirer
                              Published August 19, 2023

Unlike other stores nixing some mandatory cashier interactions in favor of adding more self-checkout options, Trader Joe's does not plan to implement self-checkout in any of its hundreds of stores, company executives have confirmed.

In a company-released podcast published Monday, Trader Joe's CEO Bryan Palbaum and President and Vice CEO Jon Basalone answered questions from customers and employees.
At one point, the podcast hosts asked Palbaum and Basalone about rumors that self-checkout would be coming into Trader Joe's stores. Headquartered in Monrovia, California, the company operates around 560 stores across the U.S.

"That's as false as false can be, because we believe in people and we're not trying to get rid of our crew members for efficiency sake," Basalone said. "I don't know what the reasons are people put self-checkout in."
During the podcast, Palbaum and Basalone denied other rumored features coming to Trader Joe's stores, including drive-through sample cups of coffee and in-store restaurants with in-aisle waiting areas.

I asked the lady that was overseeing them how long they had been there, and she seemed upset about losing her job due to the increased self-checkouts vs. ones with cashiers. Grocery chains aren`t keeping food prices down by replacing cashiers with self-checkouts either. They`re just adding more $$ to their bottom lines by reducing labor cost, and all the benefits they would pay an employee. Self-checkouts don`t get overtime, holiday pay, sick pay, always on time and never calls in sick. I spent 31 years in the supermarket business and labor costs was the one thing you had to keep down below a certain % or cooperate would be all over your ***. It`s not just the grocery stores either. These are jobs that are going away forever and not coming back. Kroger operates 2720 store alone and no telling how many cashiers these self-check outs have replaced (2720 x 10= 27,200 jobs). My bet is these self-checkout registers have already replaced 100`s of thousands of jobs nationwide.
While IMO this is somewhat a legit topic it's not near as big as theft. These self checkouts just encourage theft. Once other States follow the stupid ones where they do not stop theft at all it will get crazy.

How much do you think your shopping cart that rings up $300 would be if there was zero theft? I bet it would be under $200

BTW - I've always thought the self checkouts were stupid for a few reasons.
