Hunting SW Colorado for the first part of Sept for the first time, wrapping up my packing list and wanted to see what others have to say about the weather that time of the year. Past years show it pretty warm in Sept with highs in 80s & lows in 60s.

Where we hunt, elevation is between 8-10K’. Daytime temps average between upper 70’s to mid 80’s. Nighttime temps range between 30-upper 40’s. Last year, it was as hot as it has ever been. The year before that, we had snow and freezing temps late August/first week of September and had to go into town to buy colder weather gear. In the mountains, plan for layers and always keep rain gear with you because rain at 9K feet plus, is bone-chilling cold. Breathable rain pants and jacket stay with me all day.

I did it in 2018 and way over thought and over spent lol. Had the best of everything including merinos and lots of layers for all possible conditions. Needless to say, I was HOT and constantly stripping down to just hiking pants and a tee shirt. Got cold at night but I had a good sleeping bag with inflatable pad and that is all I needed. We ranged as high as 11K feet and while that was cool at sunup, All I needed was a light jacket.

Don't forget to get the best boots you can afford and start wearing them last week
