    Trailer tire/sway question

I’ve got a 2021 Kearney car hauler trailer. Nice trailer, with 5200# axles. Pulled straight as a needle. Loaned it to my dad and a tire blew out on him. I’ve got a trip to Colorado planned in a couple weeks and we’ll take our sxs on the trailer. So, I decided to put all brand new good year endurance tires on all four corners. Got rid of the china bombs that it came with from factory as a precautionary measure for the long trip.

Now it has some sway to it.

Only thing that changed was a blow out and new “better” tires.

Are these tires defective or what else could it be?

I run Goodyear Endurance. No sway. How much air you running? I’m guessing not enough air.

75 psi is what the installer had them at, 80 psi max on tire rating. Tpms sensors said 140 degrees max temp pulling it from dfw to Houston in this ridiculous heat. I’ve pulled it with the same two vehicles that I always have. Pulled it loaded and unloaded. Same results.

The previous tires had a 65 psi max, I ran them at 65. I’ve ruled it down to the only changes - Something got damaged in the blow out. Or the tires. Those are the only changes.

Tires need to be broke in, and let some air out of them.

          Did you have them balanced?

Never heard of breaking in times but do let some air out and test it with the sxs on it.

No. I had the mobile installer that we use at work do it and he did not balance. I am a big believer in balancing tires on everything. But I know some folks say it’s not necessary on a trailer. I have no issues spending that $$ if it will provide a benefit.

                I’ll give that a shot.

Like Dale said, tires need to tighten up !
New ones always have soft sidewalls until broke in.

Is it possible that the blowout damaged or shifted the axle slightly?

Balancing will help with more even tire wear. Over time it will matter more than it does now.

As others said they need to break in. I was told about 500 miles to break them in. its really more about removing the softer materials and compounds that make it easier to remove from the mold. Once those are gone the tire is more stable and responsive.

First off, when you say “sway”, are you saying your empty trailer sways side to side? Did it sway after replacing the blow out with the spare prior to putting all new tires on?

like previously mentioned, I’d also check the axle where the leaf springs are attached with the u-bolts. Maybe the blow out caused some movement?

Be sure to change out the air when you get to Colorado. The heavy Texas air needs to be swapped out with the high altitude air.

Check to make sure the axles are square after the blow out.

Check the ubolts on the axles... on my 20' lost a couple of the nuts had backed off ( guess only snug from factory) and almost caused some severe damage.
