    Epsom Salt and Tomatoes

Epsom salt is a powerhouse of magnesium and sulfur that can work wonders for many different things, including the tomatoes growing in your garden.

I’m no gardener, but assuming that tomatoes required a more acidic soil environment, I thought it odd that the attached article would tout amending the soil with a salt! So I did a little research and, interestingly, Epsom salt actually has a neutral pH. Now I’m beginning to wonder if my key lime tree might benefit as well.

I use Epsom salt on my tomatoes, seems to really help with blossom end rot and plant health.

I've used it in my gardens in the past. My peppers did really well with it. But, don't over do it. It don't take much for a while. My dwarf Okra did really well the following year in the same buckets.

I'm pretty sure if you don't have enough calcium in soil, Epsom can actually promote blossom end rot

Yep, you need to lime your soil for blossom end rot. Epsom salt helps to set the blooms.

i does work well for tomatoes but be careful as you can burn them up if you over do it. I have been using CAL - MAG in the garden with very good results

I’ve been using it for years, may be bloom setting it helps with. My soil is mushroom compost with composted kitchen scraps, chicken and rabbit shavings added. I use a tbsp or 2 with each plant depending on how big it is when I plant it. Growing plenty of tomatoes and peppers is never an issue, dang bugs is all that stops my harvest.

What does it mean to “set the blooms”?

The blooms will set and make fruit and not fall off the plant.
