I agree with Curt, we stay at the Iberostar, rent a jeep go into town shopping. Run the back side of the island and stop at Coconuts then on to the lighthouse.

A good thing about the Cancun area is its around a 2hr flight and then you can be at the resort in an hour.Actually had a good time despite that, folks were real cool.

All great points. This is an information gathering post and all points are appreciated!!You can go to Cancun, Isla, Maroma Beach, Tulum or Playa, but you have to fly into Cancun and that sucks. You can go to Cabo, Puerta Vallarta, Punta Mita or Acapulco, but the Pacific side has crappy beaches and rough surf and is more difficult to get to.
When you leave IAH, you are on the ground in Cozumel in 2 hours. Immigration and Customs is a breeze. When you land, you are no more than 20 minutes from your resort. You're on an island that is only 30mi long and 9mi wide. Everything is there and everyone knows tourism pays the bills. I've been to most places that I listed above and for a weekend trip there is nothing easier than Cozumel.
There is a flight leaving tomorrow at 10:18am. You land at 12:30pm and can be on the beach by 2:00pm. I hope you're on it.

I agree..I am headed to Cozumel Monday. Flight leaves Houston at 10:15 and I will be doing a shore dive at 3. Pretty hard to beat the convenience and if you get away from the tourist area there tons tons of amazing and cheap restaurants.Originally posted by curtintex View Post

id listen to Curt, and not the post above mine.) and things at the airport have vastly improved. Earlier this year, they added self serve immigration kiosks for American travelers (scan your passport, and a facial recognition scan) and you are through customs in a breeze. No more waiting in line for an hour or more, you don't even have to see an immigration official. And they've renovated the outdoor area where you catch shuttles or taxis. I always rent a car at Avis at the airport, and the roads in and around Cancun are a mess with construction, but I've never had much of an issue driving anywhere between Cancun and Tulum. You just have to learn to drive like the locals. If I were only going for a long weekend, I'd take a hotel shuttle and taxis, but I don't stay at the resorts and I'm usually diving out of various marinas and cenotes up and down the QR coast, so renting a car makes sense for me.
The last time I took the direct flight from Houston to Cozumel (Dec '21), we waited for over an hour in line at customs. But that could have just been bad timing, as there were a couple of other flights that arrived almost the same time. Cozumel is certainly easier to navigate and would be my top choice if I were just going for a long weekend.
