War against sticker burs has commenced

I hate sticker burs, but I can’t think of anyone who actually like them. They end up everywhere they are not supposed to be and are a thorn in all of our sides. So what is the best way to get rid of them?

Ive heard that fertilizing your yard helps, as well as bagging clippings when mowing and even burning them. So what have y’all found to be the most effective way to get rid of them besides moving?!

You can burn them or pull them up at the root. That's the only way I've ever dealt with them.

            Pre emergent twice !
            Pull up what you see.
No easy cure, those seeds lay dormant for a while.

I believe it is all about the timing of the product you put out for them. February is the first application time. I can't remember the name of the product, but I remember it is not cheap. I believe it is some type of pre emergent and then there is something you can do 3 months later. It takes several years of consistent application along with what others have said, bagging clippings or at least blowing them out away from the yard. I have not heard burning helps, figured the things are just too mean for fire to hurt them! I do know that the best overall help is a healthy grass so fertilize and water. They grow best in the worst conditions and worse soil! Good luck

One other thing that I forgot to mention. Our water well is in our back yard where the sticker burs are at. I don’t want to put something on my yard that could leech into our water. The water well already tests as being as chemical free as you can get so Id like to keep it that way.

Dude! They are bad this year. We are constantly brushing them out of our fluffy dogs. All over our 12 acres and surrounding properties. It would break me to try to eradicate them.

Pasture burning will knock them back for 4-5 years. Not feasible in a yard. I use a self modified pointy hoe and dig them out by the roots and put them in the trash. Be sure to get as much of the roots as you can or they will sprout back up.

They are BAD this year. We have them really bad down at the coast. Used pre-emergent twice this year, can't really tell the difference. Too many to try to pull them all up by hand, but that's what I have been doing lately.

Go to plantanswers.com. To summarize, sticker burr seeds can live in the soil for 7 years. The best control is by application of pre-emergent herbicides.

We bought a house on an acre of property that was 100% sticker burrs. It took me 7 years to eradicate them. I would apply granular XL2G herbicide every 90 days. After 7 years they were gone.

I time mowings to cut the seed heads when formed and bolted but before seed heads get to maturity. Its worked for several years.

We have 6 acres of stickers that seem to be the only thing to grow and flourish in our mostly sand soil so mowing and bagging isn’t feasible.

Im reaching the point of burning the most concentrated areas, and spraying. We only have success pulling in the few areas where they are not currently established.
