    Mulching

I have about 4 1/2 really thick acres I am thinking about mulching the underbrush and small trees and leaving the big trees.Has anyone had this done and what was your opinion-good or bad.I talked with the guy about not leaving any stick ups or whatever and he said that is not a problem because he goes down into the topsoil.Any tips or experiences with this?

I like mulching. I have done some on the ranch in Sour Lake and it promotes new growth. It really depends on if the area is being used by deer in its current state or not. If there is good bedding cover around the area you want to mulch it will become a nice food source. If not it will bocome a night time food source.

I have several areas in the woods I have opened up surrounded by cover that have become great hunting locations.

Will you only have pines left after mulching?

Do it. We had several acres done I think 2 yrs ago and a bunch more done this past year. Mulching cuts down on erosion and will eventually break down completely. New grass growth will come back up through it over time. We have some massive Live Oaks on the place that were choking w/cedars. Didn't realize just awesome those trees were until they were cleared. Those areas are really drawing in the deer now as well.

You may need to follow up with some chemical to keep the tallow and gum from trying to come back strong.

We tried to have most of ours done/cleaned up enough that we could run the bush across it once a year to control regrowth.

He said there will only be dirt and wood chips when he is done.

True. but Tallow and gum will grow back from just the roots. You can mow the tallow every year or spray the a year after you mulch and kill them.

When he gets done, I be surprised if your first thought isn't, "I shoulda done this sooner."
