Another vote for Glock. I have carried mine through rain, mud, sleet, and snow. I have never had a misfire. Its not the prettiest or most comfortable but definitely has reliability covered.
My XD is a more comfortable gun and fun to shoot. However it has been a little more sensitive for me. It has jammed on me in several matches while running and gunning. I haven't had the glock do this yet.

I can't speak for the .40, but I have an M&P 9mm (full size) and I love it...like the trigger, like the feel of the gun. Does have a loaded chamber indicator...but that's it on mine. But they make several models with as many safeties as you want, I believe (thumb/magazine).
