Feland's Gunsmithing in Cypress is good. But he specializes in Shotguns.

I've never heard of Pete Pieper in Hempstead. Is there a website for his place?

Jimmie Sommerfield in Brenham is who I use if I need any gunsmithing work. He's been doing it for over 25 years.

did you get the components and have him do all the fitting or did he completely do the gun top to bottom?

                  thanks again

I did all the footwork (bought direct from the vendors), however he can do it for you too but I think he will charge a little for that. When he finished mine, he took it to a Texas Trophy Hunter Show to put it in the booth he did.

I had a bottom of the line 7Mag that I used for the action, then he completely redid it for the 300RUM.

                    Other parts I purchased:
McMillian Lazzironi stock - these guys build based on your action / barrel contour.
                    Kreiger Barrel - #17HV - 300
                    Jewell HVR Trigger
Kelby Rings and Davidson Mounts (this is the only thing I didn't plan for, the barrel is so big, Leupold xtra high didn't give clearance.)

Mine is not one you want to take to the mountains. I think it weighed 11.8lbs without the scope, rings, mounts. If I remember correctly, the end of the barrel is .78" But it hardly moves when you shoot it...

You are starting at the right time, when I built mine it was like 8-12 weeks for the barrel and stock builds.

I have thought about getting mine camo dipped, but wouldn't change a thing otherwise.

in my experience, many gunsmiths prefer if you buy the components yourself and then hand deliver to the smith in person (or ship with insurance and tracking) .

that way, he can cut chips on the lathe and not have to worry about calling McMillan , Hart , Bartlein, etc.... and getting a status update on the delivery of your components.

order the components yourself and things will be much easier and faster in the long run. If you decide on a custom action, the gunsmith usually has some pull with the manufacturer and can get your action faster.

Some barrel manufacturers may have a common barrel caliber, twist, and taper in stock , and can ship within 24 hrs.

PM me if you need help and I'll walk you through the process and who to call , and what Q's to ask

the important thing is to speak with several different GS's, discuss your project and expectations, and decide on which one you feel most comfortable with. Some have a great name and following but are backlogged with a 1 year delivery. Others do awesome work and can finish your gun in < 4-6 weeks if you already have the supplies.

best of luck on your build

Good luck and what Blake said on the barrel mfg'ers.....Only one I found to have in stock barrels was Lilja. I just bought a 257 blank from Lilja for a new 257 wby build. Ordered it Monday and got it on Friday.
