    F150 4X4 problem

I have an 07 F150 and last week I started to have an issue where I would hear a loud scraping noise that sounded like my 4x4 was trying to engage without me turning it on. The noise would stop after I stopped or immediately upon me turning on the 4x4. Anyone have ideas of what could still be wrong?

Mines the other way around. When I switch to 4x the front left wheel area sounds like all hell is breaking loose. ALMOST found out the hard way that the 4x wasnt working. Still need to take it in but with the ranger, jeep and f350 at ranch Im not too motivated.

Check the vacuum solenoid on the fender near the firewall. There are two of them together I believe. Loud clicking/grinding noise?

It's your IWE (Integrated Wheel End). You'll probably have to replace it and the vacuum solenoid. It's easy to do yourself. Don't take it to a shop. There's step by step instructions on f150online.

Had the same issue and it tore my system up. It is air leak in the line under the hood on the passenger side. small black hose.....that is what you will find. It's happen to me 4 times since 2005 for my 4x4 F150. Cost me 3800 dollars to figure this out. Now I keep a hose in my glove box

Check the vacuum hose it what I am trying to say, against the dash in front of the passenger side of the truck. They said my battery caused it but that is BS.

Hose is dry cracked very small to find

I replaced the IWE (Integrated Wheel End) solenoid, dealer item about $45 and so far it seems to have fixed.

                  Thanks all for the input.

Thats def what your hearing. Wish i would have known it was as easy as just to fix the hose. I also spent several g's to find out it was the vac solinoid. Love fords but I hate that 4 x 4 system they use now. Wish they were like the ones back in the day, What was wrong with those??? You knew when it was in and when it was out....... Just my .02

This is what you do. Get under your truck and there is a little vaccum box on the center of your front axle. It has a cover on it with two bolts. Take the cover off and it will expose two vaccum hoses. Next un hook both the hoses and have some one get in the truck while its running (parking brake on for safety) and turn it from 2wd to 4wd. You should feel the sucking going from one hose to the other, if it doesn't suck on one hose you can narrow the issue down to the Vaccum solenoid. It will probably cost between 45-75 bucks at the dealer.

The reason they go out so often on these trucks is becasuse the water that leaks under the hood drips right on top of the soleniod and it will short them out. The new one should come with a plastic cover to prevent that from happening.

My truck is a 03 model and may be a tad bit different than yours but the part pictured above looks the same.

I've owned an 03, 07, 04, 10, 10, 03 in that order all FX4s. My 03 gets better mpg than any of the other bodystyles

That's absolutely terrible. I have been told the 2011 us much better. I love my f150 but Chevrolet seems to have them dominated on the 4x4 mpg.
