You rather have a smart dog or a dumb dog?

So the wife and I got to go to a long time friends ranch in Sonora over the weekend and help take a couple of MLD does for him. We had a great time and I even got a video of Jennifer shooting her doe. We quarter the deer, throw them in the cooler and come back to the house on Sunday. I left the cooler on the deck overnight and everything was fine. Both of us left for work Monday morning and when we are gone, our Choc Lab Maxie stays outside.

So both of us pull up to the house after work about the same time and we see the lid to the cooler OPEN!!! There is a ham quarter laying outside the cooler on the deck and the dog has a very HAPPY look on her face.. The dog got scolded pretty good from both of us and I take the cooler inside where I find, after digging through the parts, that we are missing a backstrap!

The dog gets scolded again by both of us!

After further investigation, I see teeth marks on the latches to the cooler. So apparently our SMART dog knew there were goodies in the cooler, figured out how to open the latches and stuck her head in the cooler to get the prize.

Maxie is the smartest dog I have ever had and is not a trouble maker, most of the time, but sometimes I wish that dog was just a stupid mutt!

All-in-all it has made for a funny story!

I've got too very intelligent dogs, a Golden Doodle, and an Australlian Shepard, they are great with family, Children etc... But they are uber smart and get them selves into the same situations as you mentioned. For example, the Aussie can open the back door to get into the house if it's not locked.... That'll freak you right out at 6am! I feel your pain.

            x2 on the Yeti.
One thing I learned from a dog trainer many years ago is not to allow a dog to get in a position to do dumb things. It tends to keep them alive and out of trouble.

My 9 month old Chocolate lab has figured out how to turn on the faucet in the bath tub so he can get a drink of water. The problem is that he doesnt turn the water off! I heard him at 2am this morning slurping at the water, I had to get up to turn it off. I guess its better than drinking out of the toilet.

Smart. No question. Once you have a heeler you can never have any other kind of dog. He's like having a little person around. Dumb dogs are only good for coyote bait.

I'd rather have a smart one.

My dumb one ate the cushion, off the cooler, instead of getting to the meat, inside it!

I prefer a dumb dog. You can train a dumb dog. I smart dog thinks he can train you.

I trained Hank with a shock collar. Every time his nose touched the counter I zapped him. I could leave a pound of bacon hanging off the edge of the counter and he won't touch it.
