My son wants a air soft rifle and I know nothing about them. Most of the ones I see are either electric, co2, spring or a combo of 2 of those. My question is which one is the best and how long do the electric one last beofre the battery dies?

I have a couple of electric ones, they last for a pretty long time, literally thousands of rounds at a time. If you charge it after you use it, it will pretty much never die. I would stick to electric because you don't ave to buy co2 cartridges, and they shoot really hard compared to regular spring ones. The electric ones will be more than he will ever wants and he will have a blast with it.

C02 will break skin and hurt like a mofo. Spring is the next fastest it packs a heck of a punch (usually 200-420 fps), and electric has a high fire rate and usually a fps range of 220-300(yes some do go higher but they are expensive).
Used to have 'wars' with em when I was in Jr. High... good times.. cheaper than paintball.

How old is your son? Is this gonna a backyard toy or will he be participating in airsoft events?
You can get decent kid's AEGs (electric) for $60-100, but under heavy use the plastic gearboxes tend to fail eventually. The nicer electric rifles with metal gearboxes and other improvements start at $120 or so and go way up from there.
Electric guns generally have rechargable battery packs that should last for over 200 rounds, minimum.
Don't get a CO2 gun unless he's of age to buy it himself-they are expensive and quite powerful.
Spring-powered guns ("Springers") don't require batteries and have a lot less parts to break or fail. They also have a much lower rate of fire, meaning less plastic BBs everywhereA good spring rifle will cost much less than an equivelant quality AEG.
Quick note on BBs. Really cheap guns usually use .12grams bbs, any decent gun will run much better with .20gram bbs. Both should be available pretty much anywhere you can buy the guns. Biodegradable BBs are also becoming pretty common, but be aware they won't necessarily dissolve very quickly.
EDIT: Can't believe I left this out. Get him a set of ANSI Z87.1 impact rated goggles or wraparound glasses and make him wear 'em! Same for anyone nearby. You can get these cheap at lowes, home depot, etc and they will stop bbs at close range.Last edited by Kiwifan; 01-09-2012, 02:56 PM.

my father-in-law bought himself and us 3 son-in-laws remoted controlled Air Soft Army Tanks at Christmas - We had a BLAST with those things from playing war against eachother to sitting in the house and blasting eachother remotely when one of the other would walk out to their vehicle. They did not hurt NEAR as bad as a paintball
