How much is your Alma Mater's football program worth?

Interesting and kind of mind boggling. A finance professsor evaluated college football programs the same way you evaluate corporations - revenues/expenses, cash flow, risk assesments and projected growth. Not surprisingly, UT topped the list. At an intrinsic value of over $800 million, Longhorn football is worth more that quite a few NFL teams.

I'm not sure about Baylor, but I'm thinking it's about to get Real good! RG3, and Art have categorically stirred that place right up! Not to short any of the other great players there, but that Athletic program as a whole is on track!

Look at how many schools are in the top 10 and 25 based on conference.

      Top 10
      SEC - 5
      Big 10 - 2
      Big 12 - 2
      PAC 12 - 0
      ACC - 0
      Big

      Top 25
      SEC - 10 (Includes A&M)
      Big 10 - 7
      Big 12 - 3
      PAC 12 - 2
      ACC - 2

I think this is more proof that SEC is dominant and takes care of all schools. The Bevo 12 seems like a Ponzi scheme.

Interesting. Looks like recent changes made the SEC $400 million richer and the Big 12 $200 million poorer.

You have teams like Kansas ($40 million) trying to compete with a team 20x more valuable (UT at $800 million). Hardly seems fair when you put it that way.

Wow, jealousy is a stinky cologne sir.

You cannot deny numbers. Just because you don't care for a school does not make it a "ponzi" scheme.

Texas may not win every game but as far as a business no one even comes close.

I wouldn't call it jealousy but I'll revise my original statement to characterize it as a Pyramid scheme rather than Ponzi based on the ratings. You have one team at the top and a majority of the others are really low. Where as other conferences are bunched together.

I'll hand it to Texas for building a good business but at what expense to the other schools in your conference. It's only a matter of time before the other schools get tired of it and do something about it. Oh wait...that has already happened.

Since when is business for "the greater good of all"? I would compare them to the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL or New York Yankees of the MLB. They don't win every year but they are still the most valuable in their respective leagues.

The problem you run into is a fickle fan base. The fan base is what builds your business.

Look at what is happening to Dallas...

22% of voters say the Packers are their favorite team in the NFL to 11% for the Cowboys, 8% for the Bears, Giants, and Steelers, 7% for the Saints, 6% for the Patriots, 4% for the Redskins, and 2% for the Jets. 24% say someone else is their favorite team or that they don't have a favorite.
The Cowboys meanwhile are generally viewed negatively, with 29% of voters having a favorable opinion of them to 41% with a negative one.

That's true but even people what hate them watch them or "consume their product" in hops that loose.

When you have two programs within a conference that are worth more than all the rest combined, I can see where it might be a problem for the viability of that conference. But those two will obviously be fine no matter what, so why should they care?
