I got pictures of this buck starting in September. I posted them then. He was a fairly regular customer till the season started. I knew it was going to be this buck or nothing for me this year. I started hunting this buck religously from the first day of the season. I could never see this buck in person, but he would show up on the camera when I wasn't there. I was beginning to think he had me patterned.
October 29th, the morning was very still. I mean not a breath of wind or any sounds at all. At 7:20 I am sitting in my bow blind with several bucks already eating corn when I see horns come into view from the right. It is him!! I let him come in and take over the feeder. After some time (probably just a couple of minutes) he turns broadside and I start to draw. Oh No!! He hears me and jumps away. No problem, he stops and comes back in. Well to shorthen this story some, he does this 3 more time and hears me 3 more times. I am sick. I watched the biggest deer I have ever had in bow range walk away. 4 times I drew and never got the shot off. I don't know if my clothes were rubbing together or something on my bow. I was sick and felt like throwing up.
I had 2 picture of Big Boy on November 21 and nothing since. I continued to hunt him spending the majority of my time in his area. My son and nephews also wanted to hunt the area so I gave them the opportunity several times in the next weeks.
Fast forward to December 22. I was worried that maybe Big Boy was spending all his time north of the ranch and not coming thru any more. I decided to hunt the Bobcat tires stand not far from my bow blind. The Bobcat tires stand is 2 tractor tires stacked on top of each other. This makes a perfect ground blind. As daylight is approaching I see a spike heading frrom north to south towards the area of the bow blind. A few minutes later a little 8 point comes and and feeds in the sendero 150 yards in front of me. As he is leaving I just happened to look to the east and a big bodied deer has step out into the sendero. I can see horns immediately. I quickly grab the binoculars and as the buck looks away from me I know it is him. Huge horns and that narrow spread is all I need to see. I settle in behind the .270 and watch as Big Boy starts walking away from me. He starts to turn and I know the time is here. He turns to his left and is walking across the sendero. I mouth grunt at him twice and he stops at 232 yards looking in my direction. The crosshairs settle on the middle of his shoulder. With the squeeze of the trigger the bullet is on the way. I hear the bullet strike and see his left shoulder flopping as he tries to run. After a short wait and a call to my son and nephew (who both slept in) I am holding the biggest buck I have ever shot.
The pictures don't do this buck justice. 12 points, over 35 inches of mass, 21 5/8 inch beams, longest tine is 9 inches, and only a 13 inch spread (not AR county).
