    best time to bowfish

    Im planning my next trip to Texas and i want to try bowfishing... I need to tell my boss which time i need off very soon;

    So my question is, what time a year is best to bowfish... my plan is to end my trip till october 14th becasue till them i can use my hunting license from my last trip to hunt hogs and exotics..

    Thanks

    Where are you wanting to go and what species? The best overall time IMO is late summer when the water is hot and the big gar are rolling, and at night the fish can be found fairly easy.
    The spring spawn is such a crap shoot their is no way id risk hitting it right and opt for the hot summer when the killing is great.

      carp get active soon as the water starts to warm up.... so its dependent on the region you are going too... now if you go to any bayou in houston they are always there... just keep it legal and clean

          you may want to research when your license expires. i thought all license expired 8-31 of the year purchased.

                Man I bow fish alot and if I was coming all the way from Australia to do some bowfishing I would go to Louisiana and fish the marsh there are so many types of saltwater fish you can shoot and eat! And despite what some people say I have seen some monster alligator gar come out of Louisiana and over there you can shoot more than one per day!

                    Thanks thats interesting, but sounds great! I think i need to change my plan a bit
                    Fly to Lousiana bowfish there, visit red jacket firearms in Baton rouge, and than drive to texas to bowhunt sounds not too bad!

                    oh and btw, im from Austria, not Australia

                    @crittergitter: you were right! license valid till 08/31/12.. ok thats another change in my plans

                    Thanks

                          Danial i start bowfishing in march. i have a small boat rigged out poor boy style. nothing fancy at all but i put alot of fish in it. march/april is the start of the spawn for alot of our fish. hit it just right and a 100 fish night is a good posibility. problem with spring time is possiable high water levels to deal with and it is VERY windy. late summer is a little easier to fish but numbers MAY not be as high. i have taken big gar from early spring to late summer. just gota be in the right place at the right time for them. i too would suggest Lousiana, never been myself but it is HIGH on my to do list. Lone star bow hunter association (LSBA) is putting together a spring time LA. trip that you might want to look into. Lord willing i will make that trip. will be a buch of bow hunters there, cant go wrong with that.

                          Worse comes to worse you can come bowfishing with me for free. shoot me a pm if you are interesetd. i go nearly EVERY weekend during the spring/summer months and do farily well most of the time. i even got a few riggs you can shoot with.
