    chokes?

can you learn me something about chokes in shotguns?

SO, Mary is bringing me a new shotgun today. It is coming with 3 chokes. assume full/mod/ not sure what theother would be.

I grew up a northern michigan redneck. wasnt red cause the sun, was red cause of frost bite

anyway. we grew up shooting stuff. squirrels/partridge/pheasant/woodcock (accident thought it was quail)/quail/deer whatever.

have a few single shot shotty's (in each flavor 410/20/12/10). anyway. all I know is how to shoot em, and I am plenty good with one. BUT, dont know what the crap a choke does or how to use it.

I know it will help keep your scatter tighter or not (I think).

anyway. could someone break it down so this redneck can understand it and know what one to put in it for what application (duck/dove/quail)???

You'll probably have Improved Cylinder, Modified and Full and they go from more open to tighter respectively in that order like jlp listed above.

For the game you listed above, the IC or mod will be your gotos for your dove and quail depending on how far your shots are. IC being the closer shots and over water holes etc. The mod can be used in an open grain or cornfield to give you a little more righter pattern at longer distances.

I would suggest nothing over a mod choke with ducks (I prefer a Light Modified). You'll be shooting steel/non-tox and it patterns much different than lead.

            Use that full on turkey.

IC, M, and F would be a standard 3 choke set. I shoot IC for quail, IC or M for dove and ducks, XX Full for coyotes and turkey. A choke constricts the shot as it leaves the barrel. The more constriction in the choke, the tighter the pattern at a given distance...theoretically.

Chokes NORMALLY get tighter by .005". a cylinder choke should be the same inside diameter as the barrel so it would be .000" in constriction. a skeet choke would be .005" tighter than the internal barrel diameter, an improved cylinder would be .010" tighter etc. etc. all the way through extra full which would be .040" tighter.

Some custom chokes offer oddball constrictions between some of the above but these are the norm.

You can even get what they call card chokes for shooting paper. Some of those have constrictions up around .060" or tighter.
