Advice on tablet PC for kids....

I'm thinking of getting my kids, soon to be 8 and 10 yrs old, tablets for their birthdays. I don't have a lot of experience with tablets but understand that your choices are basically the IPad or an Android based system. I also understand that some of the ereaders are able to function like a tablet now. A couple questions for ya'll...

    - I'd like to encourage them to use the device to read with, so does a tablet function enough like an ereader to be used this way or would they be better off with a Kindle or Nook? I realize that a Kindle or Nook is the way to go for strickly an ereader, but would a tablet suffice?

    - Can a tablet be used with a docking station or a portable key board so as to allow basic word processing capabilities? Can you get Microsoft Office and stuff like that for tablets? How about using flashdrives with them to store documents, etc....?

    - Whats the best "reasonably priced" tablet out there? IPads are pretty much out of the picture b/c I'm not gonna spend $500 on a device for an 8/10 year old. What do ya'll recommend as far as "must have" features (WiFi, memory, etc...)?

    - Do the ereaders, like the Kindle Fire (or whatever its called) function like a tablet? Can you download apps, games, etc. like a tablet can? Do they use the Android market or where do you get apps from?

I guess what I'm trying to accomplish is to get them something that they can play games on, store their music, download ebooks, download useful apps, etc. with. What are ya'lls suggestions? Price range is probably around $300 or so. Thanks in advance.
