My sister shot her first buck this morning with her Diamond Razor Edge. She is shooting 40Lbs and Magnus Stinger 85 grain broad heads. She will not shoot past 20 yards since that is her comfort zone. Now she admits she was pretty nervous when he came in. We found the arrow and the only blood on it was on the fletchings, the rest of the arrow nothing. We trailed the tracks for about 150 yards and he doubled back and crossed the road about 60 yards where he was originally shot. We would only find two drops of blood about every 15 yards. I know she got a pass thru. I am thinking she hit him low in the brisket. I have seen deer survive this shot. She is a little tore up but I told her that it is part of the hunting experiance. I feell like he will live, she feels a little bit better. My question to you ladies and gentleman is with that set up can she shoot a 100 grain broad head that has a litlte bit more cutting diameter? To you ladies out there, what has worked for you? Any help or comments are appreciated.

My daughter shot a doe with that exact head and was shooting 28#. It's not the head it was the placement. If I were to guess, I bet she hit high. Was the arrow greasy? Your description sounds lime its high.
Was the hair real course and brown on the end but black by the roots? If so it was high. There would have been white hair and what brown was for would only be brown and very fine if it were a low hit.

be careful that going to 100 grn don't affect the spin on her arrows. they should be all right but if you go to sight it in and it is doing crazy stuff it could because it is under spined
i shoot 85 grn out of my 70 lb set up.

I shoot the Carbon express F-15 leave a niced hole and lots of blood, and Im not a fan of mechanical blades so these are fixed! but have forward and backwards blades that cut in both directions no matter whice way the arrow comes out. I have found all my animals that I have shot since I started using them. Im 4 for 4!!

Why change the BH? As Bisch said, shot placement is likely the culprit. Did she see where the arrow hit?
Even though she would be fine with the 100g, why add a variable? She would need to redial in as it will probably hit a hair lower than the 85g.
Remind her to aim low, and let us know how she goes.

Like was said above, she'll be fine with 100gr heads, but why? Those 85gr Magnus are good heads. I too like the cut on contact aspect, especially for a low poundage bow. I just switched back to Magnus Stingers in fact, not for any specific reason, other than I like them, they are the head I used to kill my first deer, and my history with them tells me that they will fly well even if the bow isn't 100% perfectly tuned. Give her some more practice, maybe sit with her for a while until she gets a kill in your presence to make sure she's aiming low etc, but it's all about placement. Put that Magnus through the pump house, or even both lungs, and you'll recover that deer in short order.
