    Fourtrax Problem

I have a 1998 300 fourtrax that has been pretty much perfect since I bought it new. Bought a new battery this year and it went dead within a month. At the same time I am having problems keeping it running, backfiring and dying. I put a new plug in and it still died. I hooked the jumpers on and it fired right up and ran for a while then died and would not start with kick.
Replacement battery is charged and ready to install. My question, will a dead or almost dead battery cause this problem? Also, there is a small round electrical component beside the battery.(I am guessing a relay) Could it be the problem. Anybody else had a problem like this? Any ideas?

does it click when you hit the button? If the alt is bad...she will run good as long as the battery is charged..as the battery loses voltage..the coils will get weak..worst as ya go...

No click at all with the dead battery. I was thinking about carrying it to my local starter repair shop and get them to check the charging system.

....and includes back firing and rough running till the bat is dead. Then it dies and will not restart till a fresh battery, or electrical source, is present. I had the generator on my HD go out one time.

If the replacement battery is known to be good use a voltage meter hooked to the battery. start the bike let it warm up should read between 13 to 14 volts. next give it some gas if the volts go up it could be a faulty voltage regulator. Next at normal idle turn lights on if you show a big drop in the volts it may be your stator...make sure to check all you connections real good.

let me know what you come up with, i will be in on the 5th...

Round thing by the battery is the solenoid I think.

The coil wire could be arching out to ground or around the plug to the metal hex of it.

There is also a brain for this bike. It could be going out causing issues.

I have been kick starting my FOURTRAX 300 for 2 years as the electric start wont stayed charged for some reason. 3 batteries and 2 starters later I gave up. It runs like a champ though.....never misses a beat.

Kick started mine for 3 years and finally had the starter rebuilt. ($40) I felt pretty stupid when I learned it was that cheap. It has been a great ATV and hopefully will last several more years.
