    Why doesnt AR stand for...

Why doesnt AR stand for age restriction rather than antler restriction? It seems to me it would better the hunting community more by putting an age restriction on bucks rather than a spread requirement or unbranched antler. Just say a legal buck must be at least a 3 yo.Sure some people may have a problem judging the age of a whitetail on the hoof but it surely cant be any harder to tell the difference of a 2 and 3 yo deer against a 12 7/8's" and a 13" spread. I sure think it would solve some problems of 7 yr old basket racked deer spreading thier narrow racked genes!

Because as hard as judging spread is. Age is 10x harder

Is there even a way for that not to be a 100% judgement call? Guy shoots a 3.5 yo, game warden says its 2.5. Well, prove it...

I have read the average deer is 2 to 2.5 , but where is the proof on that too?

Age is debatable/opinion even with teeth. Spread is not!

Im not a pro puttin an age on a deer but seems that there would be enough body weight difference in a 2 and 3 yo deer to verify age. What about tooth wear? I know it's easier to just pull out a tape measure and just measure the spread, but there are just to many circumstances when you see old under 13" bucks IMO.

Don't worry about the under thirteen inch bucks. In an open range situation it really doesn't make a difference. Cullling on open range is an exercise in futility.

The hunting club I am part of is required to age every deer we shoot. The biologist then comes and ages them also. You would not believe how far everyone is off on their age. I mean its by several years sometimes more.

Not all hunters are very experienced at ageing deer. It's alot easier for some people to see if a deer is 13 inches versus 3.5 years old. There was a study a few years ago about a deers age were they took a sample from the teeth and soomehow tested it for exact age. My uncle wanted to send some off a deer Killed probably four years ago, but there still sitting in my freezer.

That's it. There is no ambiguity in antler spread. It is what it is and it can be seen with the human eye. While a person's ability to judge that spread might be at issue, the spread is the spread and is a hard fact.
