    Question for you gun guys?

I have an old Remington 550-1 .22 auto that belonged to my Dad. It was in pretty bad shape, jammed regularly, stock beat up, scratched, and in overall fairly poor shape. I've started working on it and have figured out that the jamming was not due to any mechanical malfunction, just decades of gunk buildup. A little Ed's Red and it's fine. The stock, I've gotten down to bare wood and gonna do a nice tung oil finish on it. I'm not concerned that I may be lowering the value of the gun by refinishing it because one, I'm not going to sell it anyway, and two, though these are one of the most reliable and accurate .22 autos, there were so many produced that they're just not worth too much.

Anyway...my question concerns a sling for this rifle. There are no provisions for a sling for this rifle. In fact, part of the damage to the stock was due to a slip on sling that wouldn't stay on the stock, so it was taped on. Yes, taped. The tape ruined the finish. I'm looking for a sling for this rifle. I'm not sure I want to tap the stock to install one, but it might be an option. A nice slip on of some sort might be nice, if available. I'd like a nice leather one.

Any suggestions? Tap and mount a standard sling? Are there some nice slip on ones? I'd like to hear any and all suggestions!

Here is a picture of a 550-1 (not mine), and a picture of where mine is right now!

If I didn't think my opinion was right, then it wouldn't be my opinion. So, any other opinion must be wrong, therefore stupid.

If its just for you and not selling I would drill and tap the mounts in the wood.

        I got an idea.
Make a sling yourself the loops the barrel and then for the rear just have it held by the butt plate screw. Should work if you don't drag it behind a truck

No drilling your stock with that.

If you don't want to tap the stock (or the dude ) here's a couple of ideas for you. These are for muzzle loaders but I don't see why it couldn't be adapted to your .22.

I would install permanent swivel sling mounts. I have tried slip on slings before and never cared for them or the look either.

Good luck, I lover bringing old guns back to life and keeping the heritage going.

I'd drill the stock and screw in the Uncle Henrys parts so the sling clips can go on. I had to do that on my rifle and it was easy. Measure twice. Drill once.

Buy the sling mounts that mount on the stock and on the tube, under the barrel.
