As a confirmed Civil War geek I would second this recommendation - "Battle Cry " is an excellent one volume summary. Shelby Foote's three volume set is in IMO, the best comprehensive history of the war out there. It took me over a year to get through it but it was time well spent - he was an amazing writer.
