    Jeep not starting question

I have a 91 Jeep Wrangler. I bought it from my uncle over a year ago. He said when I bought it that he has had it not start a time or two in the decade he owned it, he remedied the issue by banging the gas tank But never looked into what the issue was. Well for the first time it didn't start for me. I know this can't have anything to do with it but want to tell you what I did for the first time since I owned it. I filled the gas tank, ran it then once it was shut off it won't start. This is the only time since I have owned it that I filled the tank. (I just wanted to check the mpg) Is this just a coincidence or could that have been an issue.

Any ideas what could be the issue?

Also ironically, it didn't start while it was at the Jeep dealership getting a recall done on the emergency break. The Jeep House couldn't fix it because none of their mechanics could work on that old of a vehicle because it didn't have a computer that they could plug into so they could read a code.

Bang on the gas tank. Sorry that's all I got.

First check to see if it has spark coming out of the spark plug wires when cranking. If it does then check to see if it will run when you spray card clean in the intake while cranking. If it runs then it is probably the fuel pump.

I had a ford do that and it turned out to be the fuel canister that catches the vapors from the tank. It only did it after a fill up and only once in a while. Drove me crazy- finely took it in and the mechanic knew right off what it was...I havent had a problem with it since.
        Good Luck

Is the fuel pump in the tank?

Cant remember if the pump is in the tank on those, but if it is a loose connection might be fixed by banging the tank. Or the sock could be getting clogged up. Both of those things should cause issues while it is running as well. More possibly banging the tank was a fluke and had nothing to do with issue.

a little starting fluid will let you know if its not getting gas, kicking the fuel tank? fuel pump.

I'd check the connections going into the tank and fuel pump. Then check the fuel pump in the tank. And yes, that means emptying the tank if the pump is in there. Had to replace my pump two years ago in my GMC after 205K miles. Put a TRW pump in it. And have 231K on it now. Long live the 350 icd!

                It ain't a jeep. But it's all I got ^^^. Just try-n to help .

I'm guessing the pump is in the tank. I have a buddy that my be able to come check it out and spray it and see if it's getting fuel. Chances are if I try that I blow it up.
I truly thought the banging was just a fluke.

Could be vapor locked.Try removing gas cap and see if it will start

Wranglers in the 90s were notorious for fuel pump problems, especially priming. Turn the key on for a second, then off, then on again 3 or 4 times. If your pump is priming weak, it will start doing that. If that doesn't fix it, the fuel pump is out or its something else...maybe a loose ground

                        I gave that a shot.

I'll try one on/off thing and see.

Well now it will start and run sporadically then not start again.

                              Fuel, air, spark...

Sounds like it's kind of a known fuel issue, but i would check the plugs to make sure you get a fat, bright, blue spark. Then I would replace the fuel pump and filter. Sound like its on the way out.
