There are what should be obvious restrictions about selling to some that you know if a felon or should know is a felon (if your brother just got out of 10 years in prison, you are going to have a hard time saying that you didn't know where he has been all these years) or a child under 18 or someone that has been convicted of family violence, etc. There is no requirement that you identify anyone or run any kind of background check in a face to face private sale.

Other than that you can sell away. You could be walking down the road with a rifle slung on your shoulder and a person that is an obvious adult that you don't know (so you don't reasonably know he is a felon) could simply offer your a price and y'all could make the swap and go your own merry ways.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to documentation.

Some people will not sell you a firearm without your driver's license, etc. If that gun is tracked to a crime scene and the cops come a-knockin', they want to know which way to point the cops. By the same token, some people that buy a gun want to know who they bought it from. If the police find them with the gun and it is linked to a crime scene, he can do the reverse and send the cops to the guy that sold it to him.

The other side doesn't want anything to do with documentation. Their opinion that it is no one's business and if someone asks, I bought/sold the gun from/to a guy that I don't know.

Neither side is right or wrong. Both are legal and it comes down to personal preference or opinion. At this time neither federal or Texas law requires any background checks or documentation from private sales but it is certainly acceptable if you want to do it.
    This is the correct answer.

I don't provide any documentation on any that I buy or sell privately. I may show them my CHL just to prove I'm legit, but there will be no personal information traded or I'm out. I buy private sale guns for a reason.

There is just something wrong with selling a gun. I can't part with my children.

It is not "needed" but it sure does help cover your butt if the buyer of your gun were to get in trouble with said gun and it were traced back to you. Not needed but can't hurt!
