I think those hunters got arrested and deservingly so.

Just another reason to have your guns sighted in and the hunter familiar with squeezing off a good shot.

    Bottom line: tragedy.

There is no excuse for this kind of tragedy.

I just read elsewhere that the two hunters were released, but another person who was trespassing on either that land, or adjoining land was still being held. That person also has some other charges that I won't go into here so as not to detract from the thread. I just tried searching for that article and can't find it, or any other articles that mention this third person. Anyone else read that?

the latest...it's getting kinda interesting to say the least!! I find the last part somewhat disturbing?? Not sure if the cals don't match up or they haven't run the ballistics?? Weird...

EDINBURG — Hidalgo County Sheriff’s investigators released two of three hunters detained following a shooting at Betty Harwell Middle School Monday evening.

The third, an illegal immigrant, was arrested and is facing several criminal charges, including poaching, trespassing and illegal use of a firearm, Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.

Investigators believe stray bullets wounded two teenage boys as they tried out for the school’s basketball team about 4:45 p.m, Treviño said.

Investigators, however, have not been able to trace the bullets to any of the three hunters yet, he added.

Why would ANYONE be allowed to shoot that close to a school? Being from the valley I will bet there's more to this story. Hope the boys are ok

does anyone else find it funny that one boy was hit doing a layup and one was hit waiting in line. i mean . those would be some pretty outstanding coincidences. a stray shot hitting a moving target in the and one in live close by. sound more intentional to me. hope im wrong though

Very sad to see this happen. I agree why so close to a school

That is a terrible deal. Having a back stop for shooting and knowing what is beyond your target is something that has been drilled into my head for coming up on 30 years. It baffles me at mistakes like this that some of my buddies who are experienced hunters make year after year. 2 kids suffered from this terrible mistake. Tragic an I hope the kids pull through alright.

x2 last year we had a 243 round come through the window at work and lodge in the cabinet door. Lined up the holes in the window, screen and where it lodged and it fell out of the sky around a 40* angle.

                        prayers up for the kids.

I agree 100% it seems way too coincidental if you ask me. And also why are they shooting in direction and in range of a school? That's just common sense IMO

Agreed! I always think of whats behind the animal and stuff.

                            SMH. Hope the boys recover.
