I am thinking of getting into a deer breeding program. I heard there is a program where you can buy a breeder buck and trap native does to breed to him. Is this true. It is supposed to be less paperwork than the Scientific Deer Breeding and it allows you to turn loose the deer that have been bred. Seems like it would be good to built up the native deer population. Has anyone heard of this? Also, I found a great deal on some used cyclone fence that is 10 feet tall. It will end up cheaper than the Tite-lock. Has anyone seen or heard of a deer fence out of cyclone? Will it work? Thanks ahead for any input.

I have a good relationship with one of the big names in the industry and I also know a couple other breeders. Their is a TON more that goes into raising and breeding deer. You need to get with a biologist that is in the business. I would recomend starting at www.texasdeerassociation.com for starters and Dr. Kroll's website...google Dr. Kroll and you can find a link to his website. He just had an article something like "Top 12 things to know when getting in the business".
I will tell you though that nothing comes cheap in the industry. A good breed buck will cost you $25k+. We pushed around the idea of starting a small operation on our place with one or two bucks and 10 or so does. Our biologist put it very plainly to us. He asked for dad and I's wallets and a can of gasoline. He said if him buring up the couple hundred bucks in our wallets made our stomachs turn we were not fit for the business. You have to prepare yourself to walk into your pen one morning and find your best deer dead...it happens everyday...and it is ALWAYS the best deer.

I help set up breeder programs as a wildlife consultant, and I manage the breeding operation at the link below:

Send me an email or give me a call if you like. It's hard to answer your question without knowing more about your particular situation. I would be happy to discuss it with you any time.

What you are refering to is a DMP pen. Yes you can trap native does and even your best buck and put them in a pen. There are requirements on size and the number of deer that can go into the pen. The deer also have to be released by a certain date. The deer market is falling because of the number of breeders. You could pick up a good 140" 2.5 year old for around $6000. I have considered the DMP's but then there is the cost of the pen, protein for the pen, dart guns, transmitter darts, actual time to dart the deer(unless you are in an area that you could use a helocopter). We figured the easiest way was to remove the less desirable genetic bucks and a large population of the does. Then TTT deer from a ranch that has better genetics. The cost can range from $350-$700 a deer depending on Helocopter cost, grounds crew fee, hauling fee etc.
