    DPS Multi tasking

Returning home from our Sutton County lease, traveling 84 about Evant-Star,a officer pulled me over. He said the reason I was stopped was the carrier that had a couple of coolers, was restricting the licence plate and that it was suppose to be attached in view.He was a super nice guy, gave me a warning. Then asked if we were hunters and if we had game on board. Asked for our hunting licence, asked to see our deer heads and that we open the ice chests.Checked logs and the whole works. All was fine.Say again super nice and he hunts with a bow Anyone had this happen to you.

No but I like hearing that, in some areas the Game Wardens are a little short handed.

no hasnt happened to me. I have been pulled over by a local cop and then had the game warden pull up after the local had me pulled over for no license plate. All was good. Im still convinced they just wanted to get a better look at my truck

Wow. Haven't heard that one before, but guess it's possible.

they are all peace officers under the state and can enforce ALL state laws.

that is why i laugh when i hear people say a game warden has more search power than a regular peace officer.

Went through Meridian several years ago. There was a DPS Trooper and Game Warden in down town with a hunter pulled over. Was pulling a trailer with gator and blood on the tail gate. They looked me over and the Trooper ran to his car. Stopped me for a safety chain loose on the trailer (which it was). I laughed and said " here is my hunting license also because I know the Game Warden is coming". He laughed and said "you are right". Yes, the only reason I was stopped was for the Game Warden. What was funny I had no game. The game was in my hunting friends trucks who were all behind me. They all went by at a high rate of speed as I pointed them out. We all were laughing about real friends stopping to check on me. Told them I appreciated what they were doing and left. Was really a positive experience.

I was told by a GW that DPS had the authority to check hunters and cite for violations.

Any peace officer CAN cite for any violation within his/her jurisdiction, and is bound by oath to stop any felony anywhere in the state. The Game Wardens are just better trained and more up to date on game laws, while the Trooper is more up to date on traffic laws. It's about specialization....kind of like almost any doctor can prescribe anti-depressants, but a psychiatrist would be better equipped (education wise) to make the diagnosis of depression and prescribe the correct drugs.

I was riding with Tree Phantom when he pulled us over. I have to say the Trooper was very meticulous about checking us out for game violations. I was very surprised he did that. And yes, he was a very nice guy.

There used to be a GW who would stand on one of the overpasses over I-20 with a pair of binoculars and peer into the beds of passing pickups. If he saw anything he wanted to check out, he'd radio the DPS trooper working that area and have them pull the vehicle over. So I do know they sometimes work in cooperation.
