    DIY countertops?

Momma's getting a kitchen remodel for Christmas. Found a smoking deal on a set of stainless appliances. Going to do something with the countertops, refinish the cabinets, and paint/ tile backsplash. Are there any simple DIY type countertops? We would love to have granite/ stone, but I don't think the budget will allow to have that professionally done. Don't want to sink a ton of money into it, as we don't plan to be here but a few more years.

Concrete countertops look awesome. Pretty sure you could do that easy enough.

Might want to look into concrete counter tops, I am not sure how difficult it would be. Doesn't seem any more involved than setting a form, some rebar, and then staining/sealing and they look great. I have been wanting to try it but the wife won't go for it...not the "look" she's going for I guess.

To have professionally done cost more than granite though

I bet concrete would be cool. Wonder what it costs? Working on my kitchen now as well.

The styrofoam forms are expensive. All concrete has to be at least 3.5 - 4 inches thick

Try granite tile, if you can do tile work or regular tile.

Holy crap! I have a quote in hand for granite installed for $42/ ft! I have about 54 square feet to do.

x2. it ain't hard to do yourself at all. neither is the concrete but IMO tile is easier if you've never worked with concrete before.

Go to the big box stores to get ideas, and then use local folks to buy and install. Also, you don't have to go with the best grade of granite. There are different grades, and the lower grades (I think it's grade A, but may be wrong) are cheaper. Not as much veination in them, but nice, nonetheless.
