    Computer Help

    Does anyone fix computers?

My laptop turns on and boots but then it's frozen. Nothing works once it's booted.

I'd be happy to pay someone to fix it or do some trading

I am an it manager, but dont think I am anywhere near you.

can you get into safe mode? once you turn on computer start pushing F8 (continue pushing not holding). it should come up to give you an option for safe mode/safemode with networking/safemode with command prompt.

try safe mode with networking, and see if it will boot to windows.

then we can go from there.

I can get it in Safe mode. My laptop is at home currently and I won't able to do anything until this evening. Can you give me some detailed instruction on what to do? If it's extremely complicated I'd be happy to ship it to someone for a reasonable fix.

if it freezes up in safe mode its probably a hardware issue and not a windows issue and may need parts. how old is it and what make and model, i may have parts to send, maybe.

so it will boot into safemode, and let you login or just take you to your desktop with your icons, and a start menu (start button)?

I would try running malwarebytes first if you can get into safemode, and see if there is any virus's or anything of the sort. If it finds nothing then it is some sort of software issue. What version of windows is it? XP/vista/7? If no virus's I would try a system restore just for the hell of it.

of course that is if windows boots in safemode. the issue is probably software in that case.

Before it froze up I updated my Webroot and did a scan. It said it found a Trojan Virus but when I selected quarantine it just frozen every time.

NOW: When you boot it up it goes to my desktop with my icons and freezes. It does the very same thing when in safe mode. I can't open anything, run anything or use the touch mouse pad.

It is a 4-5 year old Gateway with Windows XP (I beleive it's XP)

I have eveything backup already so I don't care if it has to be completely erased and started from scratch if needed.

when the laptop boots up and you see the Gateway Splash screen, start hitting F8 to get a windows boot menu up. select safe mode with networking and download malwarebytes from the internet. if it wont install because installation services arent running, you may need to go to start\run and type msconfig in the run line. you will have the option to choose "diagnostic startup" which will only allow basic stuff to run, allowing you to install once you reboot back into normal mode. install malwarebytes, update the database for it, then run it afterwards.

This term is used to signify when your computer gets locked up. The computer no longer recognizes your keyboard and mouse commands and you need to manually reboot the computer.

thank you for your kind words. however, he stated he could get in, so we are working on that premesis until he states otherwise, or clarifies just how far into safe mode he can get.

                              gotcha.

so pull the drive out, slave it via usb and scan it that way. could be hardware, but still sounds OS/malware related.
