Wikipedia says it's only 600 fps faster. Personally I think any wssm shell is a big wast of money it's was nothing more then a gimmick to fuel gun sales

          400 to 600 FPS & zeroed @ 100yds 1.5 in less drop @ 200yds depending on bullet grain.
Short mag uses less powder and burns more efficiently.

          Other short mags work differently.
Take the 25-06. The 25 WSSM shoots exactly the same as the 25-06 using same grain bullet. But the 25 WSSM uses less powder. So you could say it might be little cheaper to reload by not using as much powder. But I'm sure the saving would be used up on other areas reloading the short mag.

So by looking at the 223 in a short mag. It would be a flatter shooting gun providing it was up against a regular 223 with same bullet.

Another great thing about the short mags in the larger bullets is it make the action of the gun a short action vs a long action. I personally hate a long action in a hunting rifle.

The super shorts like the 223 can have feeding issues. The shell is so short it has a tendency to bind up.

The case is fat with harsh angles making it burn more efficiently, but it also has a much much shorter barrel life than the std 223. ammo availability is rough on the 223, but the larger wsm are easier to come by. i dont think this particular case is worth the efforts.

I'm with you. I think all of them are a joke. There are a couple of nice WSM calibers, but not many.

The short mags have a more efficient powder burn and higher chamber pressures with the short fat cases with steep shoulder angles and hence are supposed to have better accuracy due to the more concentric powder burn. Some of the calibers benefit from from an increase in velocity even while using less powder than their conventional counterparts. The down side is that due to short case neck, one is limited to bullet weight that can be loaded without seating so deep that it takes up case volume and ability to hold more powder. Short mags are an offshoot I believe of the the PPC and Walker family of wildcat calibers that became so popular and do so well in Benchrest shooting.
