    Advice on Single shot pistols

I have always wanted a T/C. I want to be able to hunt Mule Deer and such
I am open to other makes but want the best for the money.

What should I look for in a used gun?
I do want to be able to exchange barrels up and down in caliber.

If you have one you will part with chime in as well

Although not a sinlge shot, I enjoy shooting my Savage Striker in .308- perfect for blind hunting.
It's a bolt action that holds 2 rounds plus one in the pipe. Mine is stainless with a muzzlebreak.

I used to be big in pistol hunting. The Contender is what I shoot. The Encore frame is what I would get, not the older Contender. Both are TC. Newer Encore frame will take more calibers where the older Contender one is limited in choices.

I shoot a TC Super 14 that I had re-chambered from .30 Herret to .300 Savage. The .300 Savage in a TC is a beast and is good out to 200 yards. I shoot handloads 44 grains of Win 748 and a 125 grain Nosler ballistic tip bullet. You can simply shoot factory .300 Savage ammo with good results also.

x3 I have a contender and it would be MUCH easier to get stuff for the Encore. The contender is a good gun tho.

arguably the most accurate SS pistol - MOA

one of my previously owned TC's

my HS Precision pistol ... also sold a few yrs ago

True that on the Encore ;. But there are a few dedicated loyalist and collectors to the early Contenders too .

Flywise, there are a lot of fine choices in the Encore frame with most common rifle calibers/chamberings available in the Encore, shotgun calibers, and muzzle loader barrels. And there are lots of aftermarket barrel makers, and gun smiths, to customize that lovely piece of equipment in either the Contender, the G2 Contender, or the Encore. I've seen custom barrels as short as 6". And factory barrels up to 28" for when you feel like adding a rifle stock and fore end. Just remember, if you have a rifled barrel 16"+, it must have a rifle stock on it to be legal.

The difference between the Encore, the G2 and the older Contenders is the working pressures of the cartridges and frame materials. The Encore having much better materials, has the more cartridges to choose from. In current facorty offerings for the Encore, the 7mm-08, or the 308Win would be a good choice for Mulies. For a G2 or Contender, I'd use something like a 7x30 Waters, 7mm TCU, 6.5 TCU, or similar.

Dang Mike! Didn't know you were a Contender guy. I've got 2 old style ones. One with cougar on cliff and one with cougar head. Both in .223. One Super 14 and the other is a 10". Love em.
