I've been in the military for 7.5yrs now and don't have much of a clue how the real world works anymore as far as jobs and hiring. I'm a year and a half away from getting out. Because of that commitment, I can't start a new job until April 2013. Is it too soon to start applying? One of the jobs I was going to apply for is police officer...I know that process can take a while...should I start the ball rolling now, or will they not hold a position long?

start applying 6 months before hand!!! make sure you state in your resume your active duty commitment ends april 2013. Thats what I did, and had a job lined up 2 months before I got out with a defense contractor.
as for the police thing. not real sure, as I never applied to be a peace officer.
