Well the dr appointment ended with a "NO SURGERY FOR YOU!" thank God so now I am headed into a 7am appointment tomorrow to get an ESI (steroid shot) in the herniated disk. Anybody ever go through one of these? From what I have read and heard, it will make everything instantly better! Still not sure I will get to bow hunt again this year, but........

That is good news. Surgery should always be the last option (I have L4/L5 L5/S1 fusion)

The steroid shot will attack the inflammation, will not be an overnight fix but should get better rather quickly (weeks vs months). Shouldn't end your season IMO.

And no matter what... you only have one neck... there is a bow season every year - take care of yourself first.

great news brother , I was thinking worse case scenario you'd need a Anterior Cervical Discectomy With Fusion

Let me tell you one thing, the steroid shots i had were as painful as anything I have ever had. The first one he gave me, if he had not heard any cuss words, he did when that needle went in. THOSE THINGS HURT! They cannot give yu anyting to knock you out, but others i recieved after that were getting so painful that he would give me a little valium or something to try and ease the hurt. Good luck, my first one lasted 4 years before the pain came back and others did not last near that long and finally the PT worked.

The shots don't work 100% for everyone. The first one I had lasted two weeks, the second one didn't make any difference at all. Some people have great success with them, hopefully you're one of those lucky ones.

I have been through every non surgery solution and been on multiple drugs over the last 25 years for four discs in my back and neck.

Finally found a good pain management doctor this year and he has put me on Gabapentin. It has been life changing for me as I haven't been at this low level of pain in over 20 years.

2 neck surgeries, 3 fusions (C3,C4,C5), several epidurals for both neck & low back issues. The surgeries seemed to have stabilized my neck. (I can sneeze now and not throw my neck out) But I still have considerable pain which affects my life and especially my outdoor / hunting life. Now, it's more like a stiff, extreme, chronic ache which never goes away. As to the epidural shots, I've had several and one actually got me back on my feet within about 8 hours. I had been unable to walk unassisted for about 2 weeks prior to the injection. GOOD LUCK !
