Well so far this trip has been successful. Didn't see anything on thursday at all. Friday morning there nothing to see either. Yesterday evening though, things began heating up. I was in a popup on the end of large field, and had deer all over me. The only problem I had was that they were too close!!! Its hard to shoot a deer when they are practically in your blind and walking directly behind you (on the side that is in brush). I never could get a a really good shot on the ones I saw in the field, they all stayed facing towards or away, and I wanted a good broad side shot.
This morning I headed to out to the same blind. I got in just before first light and got all nice and settled. I went about reading, and scanning the field every so often until about 7:50 when three big does appeared directly in front of me. I had ranged the area to be about 110 yards, which I thought to be a bit of a long shot with a slug, but I had been shooting well at 100 yards just before coming up here, so I leveled off, and dropped the middle one where she stood.
My first Illinois deer, just a doe, but a BIG one, got her at 118lbs and will make great eating.
I still have 5 days up here, and there is still a certain 8 pointer I am after we have pictures of on cam. two more days of Shotgun, then I get to pick the bow up. Hopefully I will end the trip with that buck and a bloody arrow.
Thanks guys, i took the afternoon off, hoping my dad might get the success this afternoon. He hasn't been as lucky as me so far. I am mostly waiting for gun weekend to be over so I can go back to my bow and try for that buck.
