    Deer jumping strings

Me and a buddy were talking about deer jumping the string and dunking under the arrow. I have had this happen before, but not even close with my D350. I'm sure it's possible but not likely just wanted to see what you all thought on the subject. Do you think it is possible for a deer to jump the string at 20 yards with the speeds of today's bows?

I dont think they will jump or duck it completely but enough to change shot entry or exit for sure.

300 fps + with buck at 20 yrds looking at me at full alert drop over 10 inches before the arrow got to him. Missed vitals and I know without a doubt I was dead on the release. I know the bows are fast, but so are deer.

Aimed at the very bottom of a Does chest once, I released, missed her by 3" 275 fps

Had a buddy at the lease this past trip that shot a buck. Aimed at the bottom of the chest at the white, ended up hitting him half way up with the exit out of his neck (jugular) 300 plus FPS on his bow @ 22 yards.

Until they make one faster than the speed of sound.... yes.

Especially if it is poorly tuned, rigged or the arrow is too light to absorb the energy of the shot. Sometimes it's not the string they duck, it's the rest.

Are you guys shooting Hoyts? J/K I haven't had any jump the string with my current bow, but had it happen in my early years of bowhunting. I'm sure it is possible. Someone had a video a while back showing a doe dropping all the way to the ground on a shot.

My buddy shot one a week ago. Was way low and nervous it was not a kill shot. The exit would was above the shoulder on the opposite side and got both lungs and lower part of the back of the heart.

I had a doe duck my arrow and had time to do 3 cartwheels at 28 yards before the arrow went 3inches over her back this year which is a little farther than 20 yards but she made it look easy.

Shot a spike one time that swoped ends before the arrow got there and I hit him on the othe side in the kill zone. They are fast!

The new bows are fast but the deer are still faster and can duck under the arrow easily. They are really not ducking the arrow so much as loading up their escape muscles for a quick exit. I shot a doe this year that jumped the string on me and I ended up cutting her throat. If she would have been a mili second faster it would have been a clean miss. Here's a pic. I shoot a S2 with 385 gr arrows (that included the gr. Thunderhead) set at 27" @ 65#. I don't know the FPS but it isn't really slow.

In short...yes easily....350 FPS is not faster than a deer's reaction time. You increase you chances of it not happening but it can still happen.

300fps is about 200 mph. Could you dodge a car traveling that fast 20yds in front of you?
