    Two part rifle question.....

    First..

Now that I have another rifle hunter in the house, I need some cleaning kit advise. What is the best cleaning kit out there? Looking for one that will do a wide range of calibers, and work on all finishes. The one I have now is just am el cheapo kit.

    Second....

What is a good vise to use when cleaning said guns? I get pretty tired of laying the rifles in my lap while I clean them.

    Thanks for looking.

F...what calibers do you need to clean??

I would not get a 'kit'...go get a one piece pro-shot cleaning rod (they make 22cal & 27cal) and snag the correct size jags (pierce type) & bronze brushes you need for rifles you have. You will also need the right size patches.

I would also recommend getting a good bore guide (bolt action rifles) like the Lucas. Lots of good solvents like Butches Bore Shine for the brushes. Push a couple of wet patches, brush, dry and follow up with rust preventative.

I am becoming a big fan of the foaming bore cleaners too.

I use a vise called the 'Parrot Vise'...they come with some padded inserts to hold the rifles. I replaced the thin rubber with some heavier stuff and also got another set and then glued on some cork. This way, I can grab the bbl or the stock. Very versatile set up.

      Research the OTIS cleaning kit..

I don't have one...yet! From what I have seen, that will be my next kit. They aren't cheap.

Also,Midway USA has a wide variety of kits.

They make .17cal rods too...the 22cal rod will clean your 308 but the 27cal would be prefered.

I saw this one at Cabela's and thought it would be a good starter kit. I have enough cleaning supplies to last a life time or I might get it. If you can tho, I would go with what Artos said. One piece rod is worth the investment.

                What Paul said.

I have a "kit" for taking to the lease in case a barrel goes in the mud etc but for at home bench work you are better off building up your own kit starting with a good 1 piece rod and guide.

                  1) Forrest, what calibers do you have and what type rifles .... bolt action, AR , TC single shot, etc.... ?

whatever you do, get a bore guide which protects the rifle chamber from damages when cleaning. Bore guides are made for all type frifles and range from $10 to $40

                  J. Dewey & Tipton make very good cleaning rods. They come in various lengths and caliber sizes. You'll need correct size patches, jags, and brass bristle brushes.

BreakFree CLP makes a bore cleaning foam and great lubricant, preservative

for cleaning the bore, I also use any of the following : Shooters Choice, Butch's Bore Shine, Montana Xtreme, and TM Solution ..... these can all be purchased through Sinclair International which was purchased by Brownells

                  2) i use a Decker rifle vise for cleaning. Been having it for 20 yrs and works like a champ. The newer Tipton vise is nice although i've never used one

                    Thanks for the info folks!

Like I said, I have always had a cheapo kit and a lap as a vise. Now that Momma D is rifle hunting, it's time to "upgrade" my cleaning gear.

                      F

go to Academy and buy a clear plastic fishing lure case ... they cost around $3

you can buy as many as you need for each specific caliber ... label each box : 30-06, 223 , 308, etc....

store the appropriate patches, jags, brushes, etc.. in each seperate compartment.
