Anyone Hunt in MN

I'll be heading up to MN on the 16th of Dec to catch a Football game. I'll be staying in Elk River.

Anyone have any experience hunting this state? Called the local refuge outside of Elk River and it seems like you just get an out of state deer licence and then head out and hunt.

I go up there for work frequently, and have hunted MN & WI several times. Deer densities are low, but there is the odd chance at a whopper. Some of the stuff along the Mississippi River can be quite good - the elk river/big lake area does have some great deer roaming around. I would not pass on a 120" deer on public land up there, they get pounded pretty hard and most hunters are in the 'it's brown it's down' crowd. The bodies are huge on those deer, and it'll throw you off a bit on judging them. Worth a shot, but don't be disappointed if you can count the number of deer you see in a weekend on one hand.

Take plenty of layers and some good heavy insulated boots. It's **** cold up there that time of year.

We scouted Elk River this summer when we were up there. Lots of water and insects. No deer seen, but it is a pretty area.

You better hope the bugs are all frozen.
