The Elk Thread

Just got back from scouting my unit in the Gila, 16A. Got on one bull around 380, so he is on my hit list!! Still pretty warm, and a lot of my water holes are bone dry!!! Gonna have to work for an elk this year!!!

I will be hunting 16a Sept 19-24 I cant wait. I was there in July and saw some really good bulls.

Most of my meals. 3 tuna packs to go with the ramin, have 3 vacuum sealed frozen bagels sandwiches to put in once I get their. Protein powder to go with oatmeal. Lots of protein bars. Need to pick up one more mountain house meal. Hopefully I will be able to have fresh blackstrap for breakfast one morning. .

What unit will you be hunting? I will be in 82 from 9/13-9/22.

My pack is at 43lbs.....including tent,food and water. I wanted to stay under 40#, but 9 days in the field pushed me over my goal. I will prolly repack once more and see if I can trip a little more.

Bow is dialed in and I am ready to go!

27 hours and counting till I hop on a plane to elk country! The reports I am getting are not great. It's hot, the moon is full, and they are pretty tight lipped. All reasons why I never go this early, but I am going to give it a try. They are in their patterns. All it takes is being at the right place at the right time. I can also grab a bear or pronghorn tag if I need to.
This will be just a quick trip of kinda scouting as I hunt only missing 3 days of work due to the fight and Labor Day weekend.
I will also go the last week of the season if needed.

Good luck! It is hard to hunt elk this time of year unless you can find them coming to water. If they come to a call they will most likely come in without make a sound.

Be out Saturday AM helping my brother on a combo elk/muledeer tag. We have located a few promising bulls via game camera. It's gonna be hot. Spot and stalk is it I would imagine as most of the tanks are full to the brim.

Good luck to you too. They are fired up at the ranch we hunt in NM. Landowner has been hearing them in the alfalfa fields at night. The full moon has them bugling pretty good.
