Question for the GS math gurus

You get a tune up on your truck. It cost $275. You went from getting 13.5mpg to getting 14.5mpg (+1 mpg). Gas is $3.25 a gallon.
How many miles does it take to pay for your $275 tuneup?

1226.85 miles is how many miles you get out of your new mpg for $275... too pay it off.. a whole 'nother equation.

I am not a math guru but it seems to me like you are saving 1 gal/mile each gal is worth $3.25 therefore it would take 84.6 gal to pay for a $275 tune up ($275/$3.25). Or 1/3.25 = X/275 which equals 275(1/3.25) = X which equals 275/3.25=x which equals 84.6.

But I graduated from Angleton High so what do I know

Not 100% sure but let me take a wild stab at it with a few assumptions....

          25 gallons @ 3.25=$81.25
          7% gain in mpg
          $81.25 @ 7%=$6.50
          $275/$6.50= 42 fill ups

I came up with 15,625 miles...and my brain hurts

            EDIT

Wait, that may be wrong....what color is your truck?

            Found a cheater here http://www.dollartimes.com/calculato...calculator.htm

and the 15,625 I listed will save you $260...so it was close

You don't save a gallon per mile. You gain a a mile per gallon. should be around 1,226.7 miles

This shouldn't make a difference at all should it??

Explain me if you dont mind. Seems like if it only took 1227 miles (Appx 3.5 tanks of gas assuming 25 gallon) that seems like a pretty fast pay back? Is it supposed to be 1227 gallons. Just trying to figure out where Iwent wrong.

                            from the online calculator

                            Miles Driven per Year 16550
                            Gas Mileage - Car #1 13.5

                            (Miles per Gallon)
                            Gas Mileage - Car #2 14.5

                            (Miles per Gallon)
                            Cost of Gas per Gallon
                            $3.25

                            Yearly gas costs:
                            Car #1: $3,984
                            Car #2: $3,709
By driving the more fuel efficient vehicle, you would save $275 per year.

Assuming a tank is 25 gallons....

                              25 gal X $3.25/gal = $81.25/tank

                              25 gal X 13.5 mpg = 337.50 miles/tank
                              25 gal X 14.5 mpg = 362.50 miles/tank

                              gain from tuneup = 1mpg X 25 gal = 25 miles per tank extra

                              25 miles / 14.5 mpg = 1.7241 gal
                              X $3.25/gal
                              -------------
                              $5.60 / tank savings

                              $275 / $5.60 = 49.1071 tanks
                              X 362.50 miles/tank (at 14.5 mpg)
                              -------------------
                              17,801.34 miles to break even
