I am sorry that some have had a bad experience with the Department but understand that there is always more to the story. I have been working for CPS in San Antonio for almost two years now, which is considered tenured in this field, and I could shock you with stories of things I have fixed. I have also had cases that by the laws of this state I could not do anything about. I can honestly say that I wake up everyday and go to work and do my best to help as many children as I can, and I don’t appreciate so called “good People” saying that I don’t want to do my job. If I didn’t think I was making a difference I would have quite this staggeringly stressful job a long time ago. I could go on but I wont. If anyone ever has any questions about CPS PM me and I would be happy to answer what questions i can.

THANK you to the several here who've posted about their wives or themselves serving (and I do mean SERVING) these children in need of protection.
I work with a woman whose husband is a CPS case worker...and I've been friends for over 30 years with one of those highly villified (in this thread) Supervisors.
I've seen her bruises and heard her stories and seen one picture (no names visible) of one of the kids she rescued in a neighborhood not many of you would dare to enter the outskirts of. I asked her once how she could stay in the job for so long (the burnout rate is high, as I mentioned earlier in regard to high turnover)...she said, "Somebody has to help them. I have so much, they have so little. I'm sticking it out." THAT is courage in my book.

By all means the ones of yall that do your jobs my hat is off to you. CPS in Victoria Texas though... I personally had two seperate case workers tell me they weren't doing anything because it was no use. They knew how the system worked and it would be a waste of time! I have 68 pages of documentation of dozens of "incidents" that my daughter went through prior to us adopting her. I truely apoligize to all of the case workers on her if I offended any one. I appreciate all yall do and I apoligize for trashing CPS in general for the actions of the several here in Victoria.
I only hope the best for HillCountryDude and this precious child in this situation. Being it is Orgeon maybe things will be different. HCD you and all involved inthis situation are in my prayers. Due to my own experience I really can't give advice without being bias so my only advise is hit your knees and pray for the situation. God Bless for you wanting to do the right thing man!

Well, I just want to let y'all know that after much frustration, anger, and other emotions over this awful situation, law enforcement and cps are finally taking this situation serious. It is unfortunate that the child had to be injured and more continued neglect and abuse had to go on in order for folks to take notice and get involved.
When the two so-called adults were drunk or high, the poor lil kid had no supervison and was living in total filthy conditions. Of course, even when they were sober, supervision is really a word that doesn't fit at any time. Other people who knew full well of the circumstances did absolutely nothing to report the abuse and neglect. I suppose that I was in the minority of people who cared enough to call the authorities. After repeated attempts to get something done, nothing appeared to be happening.
Well, I guess there are other people that could no longer sleep at night or look at themselves in the mirrors and finally decided to get involved and accomplish what I could not. The mother of the child was at a DPS office and an officer noticed a large burn on the child's leg. And someone also contacted the child's physician and reported the abuse/neglect. He said that he knew that the mother is an alcoholic and was not taking care of the child. He stated today that the child's mother will be losing custody. If I had other needed info in the beginnning, I darn well would've handed it over to the police. Ya know, I don't appreciate someone trying to investigate me for trying to do the right thing and get help for that child, but it occurred. There are plenty of people of which some are high ranking in law enforcement and will testify for my character and honesty. My background (it is clean) should never have been a subject of interest in this case to begin with.
I do have my faults, but none are criminal.Unless being a farm tractor collector/ addict is illegal.

I will say it is fair to say that a major part of this system is broken but a blanket statement of "CPS is a joke" or "CPS is too busy taking away kids from good families" is pretty rough. It's a demanding job that not many people could handle. Many, many childrens lives have been saved by CPS and there is really not much room for anybody to go busting chops about the job, and if there is...I suggest you apply for the job if ya'll feel you can make a difference I am sure the agency could use some good folks. If mediocre pay, long hours, and tons of paperwork appeal to you jump out there and get it. Oh, not to mention some of the scum you have to deal with, it can be fairly dangerous. I am not trying to be confrontational or a jerk about this...it's serious business and lives are at stake. I know first hand that there are people that need to move on and get a new job; this one will flat wear you down, I know that there are some employees just collecting a state check; but there are people like that in every business/agency that I know of; and I know there are other avenues to help these kids that are in desperate need of a safe/clean place to live and grow, so if it's important enough for anyone to get on-line and rant about it then do just that...write letters to the editor, your state congressman, the CPS unit directors and the list goes on. First and foremost, Pray...pray your head off for the children and CPS workers so that they can have the strength to continue on in this environment and that someday you or your family will never have to deal with the agency. As stated above, my wife works for CPS and has only been there for one year BUT, I will ask her if there is any other type of relief for those of you with issues and
if so maybe I can post a hotline, get an address, or a name to contact about your concerns. PM me and I will get back with you with any info she may be able to gather.

As a law enforcement officer I can honestly say that I hate CPS. A lot of times we are limited in what we can do. We can remove parents by taking them to jail but that doesn't get the children out. We are limited on what we can do as officers but I have seen terrible things happen to children and CPS declines to do anything. I've had dads rape their daughters that were 4 years old. I do my part and then some judge sets the bond so low that these scum of the earth are out the next day. So we contact CPS in hopes they will remove the children and a few weeks later I get a letter saying that CPS is not going to intervien. I have yet to have a case where they have actually done anything. So heart breaking when you see a child that doesn't even have a chance. Not talking about individuals at CPS cause I'm sure there are people that work hard and dedicate their life to children but as a system it sucks.Last edited by dcnitro; 12-08-2011, 11:30 PM.
