Looking to build an AR in .308

I have an AR 15 and very happy with it, letting my son shoot it has really gotten him out of being afraid of shooting. I'm wanting to build something with a little more power, that I can use for hunting and long range shooting. The .308 seems to be a great choice. Was wondering if anyone had suggestions before I get started on parts etc before I get off track. For instance I was checking out some uppers, and there seem to be many, but they are offered for Armalite or DPMS. Would one be more practical for certain reasons? I've learned a good amount in my short time owning an AR15, but just now starting my info gathering for the .308 build.

i was told with the 308 you have to use the same upper and lower that different brands dont match up i am trying to build a dpms right now

The DPMS vs Armalight this is about the type is mag they use. Go handle an AR10 at a store - I find them really too heavy to be useful in the field. If all you want is some more power consider a 6.8 SPC upper for your AR 15 instead.

So you are limited to those two manufacturer's only?

I could bring my ArmaLite up for you to shoot one weekend. .308. It weighs about the same as my AR15's. I have a buddy that bought a DPMS with bull barrel - it was a bench rest only gun because of the weight. The AR10 my 16 year old little girl totes around hunting hogs in the brush.

not sure thats just what i read on one website im doing the research right now i have a dpms stripped lower on the way right now. as far as the weight that doesnt bother me my ar15 has a 20 inch bull barrel and a 4lb night vision scope it is very heavy but when you pull the trigger it stays on target shot aftershot and i like pulling the trigger

I thought about that, but I already have a .270 WSM hunting rifle, and kinda wanted a different caliber. And I wanted to get a Eotech or Aimpoint for my AR15, and move the scope from that to a new gun. My deer lease is in east Texas and hunting hogs there doesn't really warrant a long range scope.

I am just starting to research this build for myself. I know Rock River carries the .308. Not sure about using parts from different companies. There are several folks on here that can answer your question.

It seems it would be more cost effective going with a 6.8SPC, and just building a completed upper, swapping optics, and interchanging lowers as needed. Not sure which route to go though.
