listen to shane, he steered me in the right direction last christmas, fiance loves her setup and fits what she does perfectly or go the used route. I just bought a setup with 2 lenses off the classifieds here for what your lookin to spend, little older but fits what i want. Taking pics around camp, offshore fishing, and other things of that nature.

The Nikon kits mentioned would probably be equally good. I'm a Canon guy, so that's what I'm familiar with. Can't go wrong with either, and there are LOADS of lenses available for both down the road.
