    feeder pen help

just got a new place to hunt last weekend. it has cows and stupid donkeys on it. built a feeder pen 15' x15' on sunday. checked it monday to find the pen destroyed with bent tee post and broken barb wire. the feeder was trashed as well. cow and stupid donkey tracks every where. what can poor white trash do? i put up 3 strands and had them tight. more wire? cattle panel is an expensive option for me.

You need to anchor it to a tree for strength.

no trees. im in a 40 acre hay field. the only tree around has my ladder stand in it. this is open prarie. the property around it has trees though.

With no trees, your only option is panels...and that still isn't foolproof if the cows want in bad enough.

For a 16'x16' pen, albeit very small, you are talking $100 in panels

Go with panels. They really help

The size of the pen needs to be bigger than 15'X15'! The cows and donkey can get too close and smell where it is coming from with the pen that small. The ideal thing would be for the pen to be a bigger area than the feeder throws corn.

If I had to bet the cows where not the main culprit. We hunt on a stocker ranch and deal with cattle all year around. We have never had issues with the cattle, its the horses and donkeys that will destroy your feeders and pens. As some have said panels will work, the size is fine.

Yes they will work, we use them. The more you use the better. To attach them to the t post we use just used bailing wire.

The bigger the pen the better. 40' x 40' is the generally recommended size. Build it in a circle. Use 52" cattle panels, and cut out a little (3' wide) jump in space. The larger size helps deter the cattle, and makes the deer more comfortable. It is expensive. But not as expensive as wasted time, a new feeder, wasted feed, wasted barbed wire, etc.

                      Good luck...
