being a machinist by trade I have personally used those before. YOu can change the internal jig to hexagons, squares, rectangles, stars or whatever shape you want. The bit is actually tool steel and as it rotates it basically just broaches the metalout. The tool is called a rota broach. On through holes its much faster to just water, laser or plasma cut but on blind holes it would suffice.
