    Appliances with IP addresses advice

We are in the process of building a new house and a neighbor suggested appliances with wi-fi and IP addresses. I did not get the opportunity to talk to him in detail about this. While I can understand a security system with wi-fi and IP, for the life of me I cannot figure out the refrigerator or stove or any other appliance that is wi-fi enabled. Seems like a waste of electricity to me.

    Any advice?

He said something about being worried that his oven would burn down the house and I replied - I've got other things that I worry about. (I mean, seriously?? People worry about their ovens burning their house down???)

Dont know. Maybe you can turn on the stove from the office so its ready when you get there.

I didnt even know they had that.

We've had dumb appliances since the time they were first built, like you, don't understand that one. Guess you could start/stop your oven, dishwasher, etc remotely???? Just one more thing to go wrong is my thought.

Whats for dinner tonight? We gotta go out the stove has a virus.

I rebooted the microwave and it didn't come back up.

Want to come over for beers tonight? Maybe later. I am running backups on the washer and dryer.

It would be the worst purchase you would ever make.

It's just the manufacturers are moving to IP based everything so that they will fit on the "smart grid" that will come along eventually.... That way they can monitor things like TV, washers, dryers, microwaves etc to sell you more monitoring services at some point in the future.... My opinion, the more complicated you make the plumbing, the more apt it is to get clogged up if you know what I mean.

If you are a techie then that kind of stuff might be cool. For me, I don't have any clue why a microwave or stove would need it. I could understand an alarm system or thermostat so you can monitor or adjust from somewhere else.

If you think smart appliances are a dumb idea...how about 9 processors in the 2012 Ford Focus.

Rolling along at 70mph when suddenly.....a ground\short occurs and BAM....engine shuts down...steering wheel locks up....middle lane with cars on all sides and the driver.....an 75 year old grandmother.

                    Not good at all.

Or better yet...cars with batteries that cost 6 - 8 grand. Don't they know batteries.....even the best on the market...are not designed to last more than 3-4 years. So we buy this new technology...thinking it's the BOMB only to find out....we've all been duped by those that think they have it solved. These new gas\battery cars are gonna be a nightmare to their owners. Old batteries need to be disposed of....at tremendous cost and who wants to dump 5 or 8k into a car that is only 3 - 4 years old just to replace the batteries?

I'm not buying any of it folks!

The smart grid, TCP/IP based electrical applicances.....so the GOVERNMENT can control who's using the most power and charge accordingly for abuse....tax accordingly....control accordingly. CARBON FOOTPRINT this is the foundation.

A hackers dream....just plug it all in and see what happens. The Chinese will certainly enjoy browsing the USA power grid.....or better yet...terrorists versed in technology.

And copiers have 20 - 200 gb hard drives with every image ever capture, printed or scanned stored on the drive within. Those that lease these machines....Financials, Intellectual Property......Privacy matters.....that old copier just went out the door with years of your information.

Big brother will be watching......leveraging technology.

i would never do that but I would ensure that your house is networked with cat5-e in all rooms, at all media centers, at all offices and at all TV's.

cheap and running a hard line network for a number of "wireless" devices will help you maintain true bandwidth throughout. just put a firewall in the front of it
