    String wax

I have heard alot of people talking about waxing their bow string. I know very little about bow maintinance. How often should this be done and how should it be applied. Do you put it on every part of the string or just some parts?
    Thanks

Not sure of the true use myself but I think i figured it out. I put it on ever part of the string and cable not covered in serving.

Yes, everything not covered in serving. I use an old, leather finger tab to rub the wax into the strings. Helps preserve the life of the string and should be done periodically(depending on how much you shoot as to how often). I'm sure there are many opinions on how often.

Lets say I average 200 shots a month. Maybe that will help with figuring how often it should be done.
Thanks for yalls replies so far.

          Wax everytime you shoot it.

Wax often and don't use anything but your fingers to rub it in. I also wax my serving.

I wax it all, even the serving (it won't hurt it, right?). Guy who owns the local bow shop told me to wax about every fifty shots or so, and to use just fingers to work it into the string.

You can clean the string also by using a dry wash cloth, back and forth real hard. Then re-wax.

About every third time you shoot(not third shot but third round of shooting) or when you notice a fuzzy look to your string. Apply the wax from the stick. Then rub your fingers up and down the string to heat up the wax. Once you have it done take a piece of dental floss and make a loop around the string(like you are strangling someone) and pull the floss down the string. This removes any extra wax that did not get worked into the string.

As a good rule of thumb on waxing the string that I use is to wax it,... when I think of it, or wax it every month or so, or if you see the string fraying I should have waxed it sooner....the bottom line is wax it about once a month. Some of the other things to check on maintenance, serving...look at it to check for nicks or if the serving has started to slip, or if your nock set has moved, (indicating the serving is moving),reserve if necessary.

I'm not disputing anyone. I'm just curious for my personal knowedge, what is the reason for only rubbing the wax in with your fingers? I also wax my strings about every fifty shots or so.

Ok, I am going to be the oddman. I only wax my string when it needs it. If I waxed it every 50 shots I would be waxing once or twice a day. If you rub your bowstring against your clothing or the bowcase then it will probably need it more often. In my case I hang bow from a hook when not in use in my shop and on another that I have outside when I am shooting.
A few years ago while at Indoor nationals I was talking with Frank Pearson and we were talking about bow string material and he mentioned that he only waxed his string about twice a year.

rubbing wax in with a leather tab can sometimes cause the inner part of the string to get hot, and fray inner strands, weakening the string. rubbing it in with your fingers keeps it from getting too hot and causing damage.

Makes sense. Thanks for the insight.

So there seems to be alot of varying times here. I guess the basic answer is "often". If you buy a new bow does it come with a maint. guide? I bought mine used and dont have any paperwork. In fact, Fred Bear doesnt even make it anymore so I cant get any info on it from their site. I was told its a fred bear omni, but cant find mention of an omni on their site.
                              Thanks for yalls help!!
