Well it was an eventful Sunday with my dad and stepson hunting with me. I had dad set up in a pop up blind and I sat with my stepson Nicholas in a diff blind where weve been seeing lots of action. As I stated before, of my 3 boys Nicholas is the shy one, the other 2 have bigger balls than brains sometimes and Nicholas is the one who thinks things through and doesnt take many chances. He's been bummed lately and my wife has been concerend that he seems to lack confidence in himself at times. His grades had slipped this year and we made a deal with him that if he brought them up I would take him hunting, and give him a chance to shoot this time, last year he came with me but just wasnt ready to shoot the gun yet. Got his report card last week and all A' s and 1 B....Huntin Time! We got set up and had a few doe's come in quick. It wasnt long before one big doe was only 50 yds out and I told him to get ready....instead, he started panicking and said he didnt think he could do it, was simply too scared. I was a little frustrated bc the week before he took a few practice shots and did fine. He started coming up with excuses and in a few minutes the doe's had left. So an hour or so goes by and we had some young bucks come in, but none were shooters. While we were sitting I had talked to him about relaxing and taking a good shot if we got another chance, I knew he would be proud of himself if he overcame that fear and fired a shot. Around 9:30 we decided to try and sneak up on another feeder I have and see if we could jump a doe or spike, he was down for that! As we approached the spot I saw a few deer, but they were down about 100 yds past the feeder, I was thinking they might be a lil too far for him, but I guess my pep talk worked bc he was ready to rock. He actually crawled up to a tree stump and rested the gun and lowered the boom on a nice doe at 140 yards, perfect shot and dropped it dead in its tracks! Ive never seen him so excited, at first he thought he'd missed, but when I informed him that the deer had dropped like a sac of potatoes he got up and started high fiving me and started doing some sort of chicken dance! I was proud of him! We went and picked up my dad and cleaned the deer together, was a great hunt. Dad saw lots of deer but nothing he wanted to shoot yet. Said he actually had a spike walk up to his pop up blind and almost stick its head inside, so needless to say he enjoyed the hunt. Nicholas says he wants a buck now so if his grades stay up I think we can make that happen! I also got a chance to shoot my dads AR 15, what a sweet gun those are, I think I found me a new hog gun!!
