Ok, to clear up the misconceptions some are having. Each of us are only shooting our legal limit when the opportunity presents itself. Thanks for the advice, just wanted to see what everyone elses experience was with these corn eaters!!

billfromtx - I have a ranch south of Benavides off 339 and have never seen a javi there either. For some reason at this lease which is about 5-10 minutes from the ranch we are covered in them. Last year it wasn't as bad, but it could be that the extra forage this year has really helped them out. The latest thing with the javis are some new babies. It seems we now have at least 4 new ones to add to the pack.

my prediction is that javi's will become a rare trophy of sorts int he future. Seems like they are getting a bad wrap and getting hammered for no reason other than they eat to much corn.

Just my .02. They are a legal game animal and as long as the law is being followed carry on. I just don't want to see them disappear ( I doubt that is possible).

I had a place in Hebbronville years ago and Parks and Wildlife came in and studied them. Many were collared and traced to where they went and when the went there. In dry years Javi's will self abort their fetus when there is not much food available. In better years they will propagate well. I would be easy on shooting them on site as they are a fragile animal as far as making a come back. They do not reproduce as hogs and only have 1 or 2 babies each year. Also if you are shooting them, as with any game animal you need to take care of the meat as you would a deer as not to waste it, (I'm sure your group is doing this already).

By taking care of the meat I am sure you mean to just gut and skin it as quickly as possible and get it on ice? How bout the males? They stink so much it is just hard to skin them sometimes!! Is there a special way of skinning these guys or just do it the same as the females?

Here is the way we do it. You don't need to gut them. Hang them and start from the top. Skin it out, just make sure you go under the scent gland in the back. This takes no special effort, as you will usually go right under it. If you do hit it, switch knives ASAP. We keep the front and rear quarters and the backstraps. This is all that is required to keep it legal. I kept the head off mine, for a euro. Best of luck to ya. BTW, I wasn't trying to be an a-hole about your thread. I just misread it and you cleared it up.

So if you shoot them in the gut and run off and you can't find them....technically it shouldn't coun't towards your 2

I second the bb gun option. Just stings them enough to make them leave, but does not hurt them. Plus bb's are a lot cheaper than arrows. I like the javs and don't want to kill them, but they will ruin a deer hunt fast.
