Low Budget Review - EZ Go from Ennis Golf Carts

First of all, I am in no way related with or in business with these guys, so this isn't an advertisement - just an endorsement of a good experience.

For several months, I had looked around for a suitable vehicle for our lease in Nebraska. Relatively rough terrain, and we of course want to be as quiet and scent-free as possible at all times. I of course looked to a Bad Boy Buggy first, but I was concerned about some things I had read, I wasn't very excited about the price, and I was having an immense problem finding someone to sell me one in the Austin area.

Finally, I contacted some friends of a friend who rebuild and service golf carts. I learned that they had a shot in Seward's Junction - Ennis Golf Carts. As soon as I had a chance, I went and looked and ended up buying. I bought an EZ-Go that had been used for a tailgaiting vehicle at A&M games. A few mods and it was ready to hunt at less than half the price of a Bad Boy. They had it ready for me in 2 days, and I was ready to go for my Thanksgiving trip.

After showing it off to all the neighbors, I loaded up my new toy and went to Nebraska for a long weekend. Two of us tooled around our 1,000 acre lease for three days in this thing, taking (almost) any hill, crossing creeks, setting stands, and hauling my 200 lb., 160-inch buck back to camp (see Hunting Reports).

This thing was fantastic in all respects. 100% quiet, fast and powerful enough, comfortable to ride in. I'm going to get a few more toys put on it and perhaps a little more torque so I can make it up the 2 hills is struggled on, but otherwise this thing was perfect. We even had a couple of creeks to cross with ease.

The only mild complaint is that batteries were a challenge in these conditions. It was well below freezing most of the time and with two of us going up several hills and going long distances in the cold, we had to recharge regularly, but this was only a slight inconvenience.

    Gratuitous big buck pic attached...

The weather gets all of them. The one in my garage does not do good in cold weather. the heaviest thing my carries is me and my golf clubs! Very nice rig but a much better critter!!!

Nice, how often were you charging it up there?

I have a 2+ year old bad boy and while it is nice and has served me well, I would not spend that kind of money on one again.

In the cold weather, I was charging it twice a day. We'd charge overnight and then between hunts. The first day, we ran around quite a bit in the morning and ran it down. It was also less than 20 degrees when we started out, and we were testing its limits. After that, it probably would have run a full day on one charge just going out for hunts and back, but we hooked it up in between just in case.

Have you changed out the controller?

What did the a rig like that cost you? I have been looking for something to use in the Hill Country.

                  Aghntr98,

Nice cart! How old are the batteries? Old bateries (plus the cold) may be a reason for the charging. I have an EZ GO 36 volt and love it. I plan on adding 4 guage wires which will increase the power some. Eventually I will add a high torque motor/controller to make sure I have max power.

Bowhuntertex.....you can get into a used cart without the lift and wheels for around $1,500. By the time you add all the extra's (lift, wheels, tires, cargo box, etc.....) you may be looking at around $3,500 to $5,000. I've already added a brush guard, winch, heavy duty front end steering arms, heavy rear leaf springs, car shocks on the front, new batteries ($100 each X 6), and a steering column ice chest for the brewski's on my TXT model.

I've had an EZ-GO Golf Cart for a few years now and love the heck out of it. I've tested it to its limits and it hasn't not let me down one bit. These things are very very quiet with plenty of power.

Hey Bill, check out Conroe Golf Cars. This is where I got mine.

I've got about $4,300 in that one as it stands. It has a heavier controller in it, but I don't recall exactly what size. It is not brand new, so the batteries are not completely new, but they aren't that old, either. I did realize while I was up there that I had not checked water levels, etc. before leaving, so I'll check those this week.

They make a charge indicator, but I may get a little fancier and get a charge indicator like my dad has in his boat that monitors each battery individually - that way I can tell if one is going bad.

During the off season, I'm going to get a receiver hitch put in the back so I can put a feeder on the back or a rack to carry stuff. I'm also going to get a roof rack and probably a heavier duty controller to carry all that stuff.

We did also decide that we want to add a winch with a very long cable to the front. If we had one of those, we wouldn't have had to drag that brute up out of the creek bottom.
